Hands up coaches if you are struggling to get your players to use preliminary movements ? We see so many players who try to out sprint their opponent when really, what they need to do is out-think and out play them. Prelim movements are one of the best ways to do this and we love drills like the one in this video to help refine those skills. You can see in the movement from our players - Amelia, Lexie and Taylor - they do a quick change of direction and cut across the front of their player - which is the pole in this instance - before clearing back to then front cut the player or pole again. When you are coaching this drill its really important that you look for the crispness in the movement, ensure the players are using their hip switch on their change of direction, and they are using a powerful movement in their front cut to, to cut their player off and keep possession. Players have to practice prelim movements regularly so it becomes part of their muscle memory and they can implement it intuitively once they are on the court.
