Well, this happened!! 😃🤣 Ok so apparently a young Fledgling American Kestrel “North America’s Smallest Falcon” randomly got into my office somehow!?!?! 😂🤷🏻‍♂️ We scared each other in shock, helped each other out, bonded, then I was so happy as I watched her fly off near her mom outside, and was so thankful for the overall ONCE IN A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE!!! Then I went and cleaned up bird poop in my office… #falcon #babybird #crazystory

These American Kestrel chicks are ready to eat! Watch one chick grab an entire prey item as mom enters the nest box. She retrieves it and starts the process of ripping it into smaller pieces to feed to the nestlings, who are between 13 and 16 days old in this clip from May 28. Older siblings will usually eat first until they are full, and then the smaller chicks get their turn.Follow along at the link in our bio.

Happy #FreedomFriday! 🥳🦅 Our orphaned American Kestrel chick (Falco sparverius) is all grown up, now! It didn't take long for her to grow into her adult size, and she learned to hunt VERY quickly! How do we know she's female? American Kestrels are sexually dimorphic, meaning that males and females exhibit different visual characteristics even though they are the same species. Male Kestrels (like our ambassador, Captain Jack Sparrow-Hawk!) have striking blue-gray wings and a black-tipped, rufous tail. The females have a subtler, warm reddish-brown all over their body, which is covered in thin black stripes. Since this Kestrel chick grew up to be the brown striped morph, this means she is female! What is first-year plumage? See how her feathers (and other release-ready baby birds) aren't as sleek and majestic as a breeding-sized adult? We lovingly call these "cruddy baby feathers." Baby raptors are born covered in fluffy down, which helps keep them warm. However, they must grow RAPIDLY, meaning that the majority of their body's resources are dedicated to growing and keeping themselves warm. This means that flight feathers and adult plumage aren't a concern until much later in the chick's development. Once a juvenile's flight feathers grow in, they are functional! But they aren't the same quality as a well-developed, strong, post-molt feathers. Think of baby feathers as a "rushed job," versus the second-year plumage, which is allowed to take its time and fully develop. It is during this first year that the "cruddy baby feathers" are visible on young adult birds. Over the next year, they will slowly molt their flight feathers, gradually replacing their worn and tattered baby feathers with sleek, healthy new ones. #wildliferehabilitation #wildliferelease #falcons #americankestrel

One of the MANY baby raptors who have come through our doors this spring has been this baby American Kestrel (Falco sparverius)! This little puffball with legs came to us after the recent windstorms blew him from his nest, dropping nearly 30 feet to the ground. Miraculously, he suffered only minor bruising, and was ready to EAT from day one! While we would have preferred to renest him, the height of his fall and the precarious location of the nest made renesting him nearly impossible. If you've met Captain Jack Sparrow, our ambassador American Kestrel, then you now have an idea of what he looked like as a nestling! We aren't sure whether this one is a male or female, but we will know by the time they develop their adult plumage in the coming months! #wildliferehabilitation #babybirds #americankestrel #wildlifehospital #raptors
