A King Tide is one of the highest naturally occurring tides of the year. It happens when the gravitational pull of the moon and sun line up in a way that causes ocean levels to rise higher than normal.
In low-lying areas like Miami, that extra water can push through storm drains, canals, and streets—causing flooding even when there hasn’t been any rain. This is often called “sunny-day flooding.”
Weather, wind, and rising sea levels can make the flooding even more noticeable.
No storm. No heavy rain. Just the ocean coming in higher than usual.

What the flood is going on in Miami? What is King Tide and why does it seem to be getting worse here in South Florida? Comment WTF to learn more.
King tides are exceptionally high tides that occur when the gravitational pull of the moon and sun align to amplify the tides, especially when the moon is closest to Earth. In South Florida, king tides typically occur in the fall and yes, they have been making their way into our urban environment for quite some time, but in recent years we’ve been feeling the impacts even more.
First, Miami sits only a few feet above sea-level, so we’re bound to experience some flooding when major tides roll in. However, in the last 30 years, Miami has experienced 8-inches of sea level rise. These 8-inches have led to a 400% increase in flooding events.
To make matters worse, Miami sits on porous limestone rock. Think of it as Swiss Cheese with a bunch of holes in it. Water is constantly moving through the ground beneath us. When king tides roll in, an excess of water is pushed through our porous limestone rock. This leads to water literally being pushed up from underground into our urban environments.
@miamiwaterkeeper has launched a campaign called “What The Flood”. Comment WTF and we’ll dm you the link to sign a petition urging Miami to make necessary investments in our stormwater infrastructure.
