Kitchen lighting can feel really overwhelming. Here are some tips and guidance to break it down and create a simple process for getting it right. #Lighting #interiordesign #kitchendesign #lightingdesign

I’ve done a couple of lighting posts already that you can scroll back to find. But kitchen lighting is one of the things I get asked about a lot when I’m doing design consultations. It’s really quite straight forward though if you stop thinking about needing to light EVERYTHING and really stop and think what kind of lighting so I need where AND what kind of different atmospheres you want to create - both when the lights are off and on. Because lighting should add to the design of the room, not just be a practical necessity.
I think kitchen lighting falls into three categories:
1. Task lighting (where you’re working away, chopping, mixing, prepping, cooking and washing up)…these areas need to be well lit - but this does NOT automatically mean spots!
2. Ambient lighting - don’t think task or bright, think atmosphere
3. Accent lighting - what features do you want to highlight? Some architectural features? Some beautiful wall tiles or marble, or even the floor?
I hope this was helpful. I’ve put together a list of all the lights I’ve used and like in my Shop My. The link can be found in both my bio and my ‘product links’ highlight
That expensive kitchen pendant lighting deserves a few questions before it deserves your money. 👀
I love a beautiful fixture. But when I’m helping someone choose kitchen lighting, I want to know how it’s going to work when they’re cooking, entertaining and winding down at night.
Here are three questions worth saving before you shop:
1. How low does it actually dim?
“Dimmable” doesn’t tell you the whole story. Ask for the fixture’s dimming range and the manufacturer’s compatible dimmer list. If you’re looking at kitchen pendant lighting in a showroom, have them turn it all the way down. Is that the evening glow you want?
2. Where is the light actually going?
A bright-looking shade doesn’t automatically mean a well-lit island. Tinted glass, shades and diffusers affect the light leaving the fixture. For integrated LED kitchen pendant lighting, look for delivered lumens—the output of the assembled fixture—and ask how that light spreads across your countertop. Total output and where it lands both matter.
3. What can be replaced if something fails?
With integrated LED kitchen lighting, ask whether the driver and LED module are replaceable, whether replacement parts are available and what the warranty covers. An LED life rating isn’t a warranty on the entire fixture.
Here’s why I care: if one pendant fails and the model has been discontinued, keeping your matching set could become a much bigger project.
You can absolutely choose kitchen pendant lighting because you love how it looks. Just make sure you understand what comes with it. Those details help you decide whether the price makes sense for YOUR home.
Save this for your kitchen lighting appointment—and tell me: have you ever bought a light you loved until you actually turned it on?

Don’t put your kitchen lighting in the middle, as it might not light up the whole space.
Instead, place the lights evenly to make sure all countertop areas are well-lit 💡🍽️
KITCHEN LIGHTING
A well-lit kitchen is about more than simply adding light. It’s about creating a design that supports the way the space is used throughout the day.
The foundation of any successful kitchen design is layered lighting. Combining task, ambient, and decorative lighting ensures the space is practical, comfortable, and visually balanced. Task lighting over preparation areas, ambient lighting for overall illumination, and decorative features such as pendants or island lighting each play an important role.
Productivity should also be a key consideration. Lighting should fall directly onto work surfaces to improve visibility and reduce shadows, while practical additions such as PIR sensors in pantries can make everyday tasks easier and more convenient.
Finally, placing different lighting elements on separate circuits provides flexibility and control. Whether you’re cooking, entertaining, or making a late-night visit to the kitchen, having the ability to adjust lighting levels and switch individual features on and off allows the space to adapt to every occasion.

💡 KITCHEN LIGHTING MATTERS!
A small mistake in light placement can create shadows and reduce visibility while cooking.
❌ Wrong: Placing lights too far (900mm) causes shadows on your workspace.
✅ Right: Proper placement (450–600mm) ensures clear, focused lighting where you need it most.
