I was genuinely scared of knitting with two colors. It just looked… complicated. Like something “real” knitters could do - not me. The first time I tried, I failed. My test knitters told me something recently that I found absolutely crazy… I have now run a few test knits, and while speaking with my test knitters, one thing came up again and again: apparently, a lot of designers refuse test knitters who don’t have enough followers or aren’t “hyped” enough in the Instagram game. I honestly find that wild. It never even crossed my mind to pick test knitters based on follower count. The logic, I guess, is that the bigger someone is on Instagram, the more views and visibility their project will bring to your design. On paper, that probably makes sense. But I also think there are a lot of flaws in that reasoning. 1. Your test knitters are not free marketing. They should not be picked according to their ability to promote your design. The point of a test knit is to improve the pattern, not to create unpaid advertising. Test knitting is actually for: improving the pattern, creating community, and making people feel included. 2. New test knitters can actually be incredibly helpful. They often notice things that more experienced knitters don’t see anymore, or they approach instructions differently. I honestly think having knitters of different levels makes a pattern much stronger. 3. And while believing firmly in point 1: people who have never test knitted before are often SO excited to be part of the process. In my experience, they tend to be more vocal, more engaged, and sometimes even post more about the project because they are genuinely happy to be included. So pushing them away simply because they don’t have enough reach feels quite illogical to me. At the end of the day, I’d rather have engaged and thoughtful test knitters than impressive follower counts. #tricot #knitting #knit #faitmain #tricoter
