At first glance, it looks impossible — a cowboy throws a rope around a moving horse or cow, the rope tightens instantly, and somehow their hands don’t get burned by friction. But the reason is a mix of technique, equipment, and physics. First is the type of rope. Roping ropes (lassos) are made from special materials like nylon or treated fibers that are smooth but stiff, designed to slide without generating extreme heat. They’re very different from rough ropes that would instantly cause rope burn. Second is how cowboys hold the rope. They don’t grip it tightly and let it rip through their hands. Instead, they use controlled loops, coils, and timing. Most of the force is transferred through the saddle horn, where the rope is wrapped. The saddle absorbs the load, not the cowboy’s hands. Third is gloves. Many cowboys wear leather gloves that act as a heat barrier and reduce friction, protecting skin from burns and cuts. And finally, there’s skill. Experienced ropers never fight the rope. They let the horse’s movement and the saddle do the work, while their hands only guide and manage slack. So it’s not that their hands are immune — it’s that smart equipment and proper technique keep the dangerous friction away from their skin. #foryou #reels #discovery

Ideas to transition out of neck hooping. Thankful for feeling a lot of love these days from family, friends and even strangers that see me break down. 🙏 for no more cancer. Doing these little videos give me brief moments of hooping and exercise my chemo brain. If there are any type of transition or tutorial videos you would like to see, let me know. #neckhooping #healthyandblessedtuts #cancersurvivor #healing #healthyandblessedtutorials #hulahooptutorials #hulahooptutorial #hulahoopersofinstagram #hulahoopersofig #hulahooping #hulahooper #isolations #elbowhooping #nooping #practice #lassos #loved #prayer #hulahoop

On the snowfields of Xilinhot, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, horsemen charge across the vast white expanse, lassos in hand. Manes whip in the wind as hooves strike the snow, sending misty sprays into the air. Light and shadow blend together, painting a breathtaking ink-wash masterpiece in motion. #ChorusofLife #YearofHorse

Want to learn how to lasso a shark for science? Jorge Fontes (@fontes_ecodive), an Azorean scientist we met on OceanXplorer, has developed a non-invasive technique with lassos to tag blue sharks. He partnered with Fred Buyle (@fredbuyle), who was the first to successfully “lasso” a shark with this method. The long-term goal is to create dynamic (moving) marine protected areas to protect this "most fished" species of shark. Enjoy some more shark content and watch the full video.
