In her first Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday, new British Prime Minister Liz Truss fielded a question from her predecessor Theresa May about why all three female prime ministers have been from the Conservative Party.
“It is quite extraordinary, isn’t it, that there doesn’t seem to be the ability in the Labour Party to find a female leader, or indeed a leader who doesn’t come from North London,” the prime minister replied. “I don’t know what it is. I don’t know what the issue is.”
Margaret Thatcher, who served from 1979 to 1990, was the country’s first female head of government. Theresa May, serving from 2016 to 2019, was the second.
