What you’re seeing is pragmatic differentiation: 👉 toddlers naturally use the language that matches the person or situation. So when Dad switches to English and you see that brief pause? That’s not confusion — it’s processing. His brain is deciding, “Which language do I use now?” And this part matters most for parents to hear: 💬 Being bilingual or multilingual does NOT cause speech delays. Children learning multiple languages reach the same early milestones as monolingual children (Pearson, B., Fernández, S., & Oller, D. 1993). When you add all their words together, total vocabulary is typically the same. One more fascinating piece: Pragmatic language skills — adjusting how we talk based on who we’re speaking to — show up early in all children. Even monolingual 4-year-olds simplify their speech for younger kids (Shatz & Gelman, 1973). Storytelling is one of the most powerful ways young children organize their experiences and make sense of the world — but it doesn’t start with fully formed narratives. ✨Remix with @ joeejr on TT Long before toddlers can tell their own stories, the foundation is being built through everyday interactions with their parents. In the earliest months: Parents narrate their baby’s day and experiences. “We saw a bird! The bird was singing. Tweet tweet!” Even though baby can’t respond yet, they’re learning what makes something worth sharing and how to organize experiences into stories. As language emerges: Toddlers begin to participate by adding single words or gestures to the parent’s story. Parent: “Remember the park?” Toddler: “Swing!” Parent: “Yes! You went on the swing!” Together, they’re building the story across conversational turns. By age 2-3: Children start contributing more to stories and eventually telling simple stories on their own with adult support — exactly what we see in this video. The key throughout this progression is responsive interaction. When parents narrate, expand, confirm, and fill in details, they’re not just helping their child communicate in the moment — they’re teaching the building blocks of narrative thinking. Storytelling isn’t just about language. It’s how children learn to share their inner lives, connect with others, process emotions, and develop a sense of self across time. Background TV refers to television that is on but not actively watched by the child (or often by anyone). Rather it is used as ambient noise. Across 20+ years of research across developmental psychology, pediatrics, and language research, there is strong convergence on three points: 1️⃣Background TV disrupts attention Infants and toddlers: - Look away from play more often - Have shorter play episodes - Take longer to re-engage after distraction Even when children are not watching, their attention is fragmented by sound and motion. 2️⃣Background TV reduces the quality and quantity of adult speech Multiple lab and home studies show: - Parents talk less often - Utterances are shorter - Language is less responsive and contingent This matters because language development depends more on back-and-forth interaction than word exposure alone. 3️⃣Background TV alters interaction patterns Rather than simply “less interaction,” research shows a shift in the type of interaction: - Fewer shared, joint activities - More parallel or solitary play - More child self-directed activity with fewer adult scaffolds Effects largely persist after controlling for family income and parental education. At 18 months, pointing to body parts when I name them (and trying to repeat the words) shows she’s connecting words to meaning, following directions, and building early language skills. Gestures come before clear speech, and can be a huge predictor of later language development. Every little point and attempt counts. Try it during diaper changes, bath time, or while reading books or singing songs.
