What exhibition has had the most influence on you? For Larry Bell, it’s his show of outdoor works at Madison Square Park in New York, “Larry Bell: Improvisations in the Park” which is on view through March 15, 2026.
In this episode of Under the Influence, Larry Bell reflects on the work of H.G. Wells, relays advice learned from lifelong friend Robert Irwin, who provided all his students with “an avenue for trusting themselves,” and discusses the importance of spontaneity, improvisation, intuition, and trust—“the four most important tools” in life.

💥‘Larry Bell & John Chamberlain’ is now open at our LA gallery.
Great friends as well as iconic artists of the American postwar period, #LarryBell and #JohnChamberlain each forged distinct careers by harnessing the new technologies of their time to transform everyday materials into pathbreaking works of art.
See the first exhibition to date that focuses on Bell and Chamberlain’s exchange of ideas through 2 September.
LARRY BELL / LIAM EVERETT • Join us next Wednesday from 6 to 8pm for the opening of the duo show of Larry Bell and Liam Everett, “The Field”, at 6 rue du Pont de Lodi, Paris.
The exhibition “The Field” gathers for the first time in Europe the works of Larry Bell (Chicago, 1939) and Liam Everett (Rochester–New York, 1973), two American artists separated by several decades but driven by the same exploration of light as a phenomenon at the same time physical, perceptual and metaphysical.
—Christian Alandete & Emma-Charlotte Gobry-Laurencin
Opening on Wednesday, September 3, from 6 to 8pm
On view from September 3 to 27, 2025

Larry Bell reflects on the work of H.G. Wells—whose relationship to creative work inspired his own—in this latest episode of “Under the Influence.” Relaying advice learned from lifelong friend Robert Irwin, who provided all his students with “an avenue for trusting themselves,” Bell also discusses the importance of spontaneity, improvisation, intuition, and trust—“the four most important tools” in life.
The first outdoor exhibition of the artist’s works, “Larry Bell: Improvisations in the Park,” is on view at Madison Square Park, New York, through March 15, 2026; “Larry Bell: Irresponsible Iridescence” is on view at the Judd Foundation through January 31, 2026.

The austere glass cubes for which Larry Bell is best known landed in New York City’s Madison Square Park this fall. Concurrently, a smaller show at the Judd Foundation in Soho showcases his lesser-known works on canvas.
These all feel nostalgic, like they’re vestiges from another era. Yet, at the same time they lure us in with an authenticity that meditates on those bygone aesthetics and how they relate to today.

In this clip from his talk at OCMA in 1999, Larry Bell explains hearing aids' impact on his artistic process. The shift in his hearing marked a turning point in Bell's work as his experience of the world began to change. This anecdote emphasizes the significance of an artist's mindset and life experience, illuminating how changes in their day-to-day manifest conceptually, procedurally, and visually in their work.
