Safety is one of the many reasons why training your dog is important. I train a “leave it” cue to intervene if my dog is approaching or investigating something I don’t want them to ingest. Here’s how I train a “leave it” behavior: 1. Mark & reward eye contact 2. Put eye contact on the cue “leave it” 3. Practice “leave it” (eye contact) with no distractions 4. Practice “leave it” with easy distractions like boring usually non-food items 5. Work up to harder distractions like dropped food, etc. I use eye contact as the behavior attached to the cue “leave it” because if the dog is looking at me, they’re not going for the item! Turning their attention to me is an incompatible replacement behavior to reaching for and grabbing something dangerous. This cue requires a lot of practice and positive reinforcement to be reliable long term!
