It’s a new basktball season, so focus is a priority for me as a coach and that’s what I tell my team and student athletes I speak to. This means it’s time to take inventory to see what may distract us from the goal and make the adjustment. The focus and growth required to reach a goal or meet a new challenge often requires letting go of anything that has not proven to support our progress, including old habits, people or places that hold us back. When God is leading us to move forward, we can trust that it’s for our good. So here is my encouragement for you: Don’t shrink to remain who you were. Bitterness is one of the most destructive emotional states. It will rot you from the inside out and destroy your health. Bitterness is like drinking poison and hoping it hurts someone else. But it won’t. It only hurts you. When people wrong you, they cause you pain. They hurt your heart, and over time, all of those injuries leave you with a beat up, scarred up heart. A sick heart. And a sick heart will produce a sick body. Forgiveness liberates you from the prison of pain. It’s like removing the garbage. When someone wrongs you, it is as if they leave a bit of trash in your home. You pick it up, discard it in the bin, take it out to the curb, and then let God—the garbage collector—dispose of it. That is how you cleanse your heart and release the burden of bitterness, resentment, and unforgiveness.
