We were in the middle of an English lesson and something happened that I wasn’t prepared for. One of my students told me her brother was killed in a s*icide b*mbing. He was 25. He used to be a teacher. When girls were banned from school, he was the one teaching her English at home. After the Taliban came, he lost his job and had to work at a money transfer office. That’s where it happened. I was recording the lesson for the girls who couldn’t make the call. I didn’t expect that moment. I didn’t know what to say. I just froze. She’s only 21 years old and she wants to become a doctor so she can help people. You would never hear the pain in her voice if you didn’t know her story. This is why I teach these girls. They are banned from school, but they are still studying, Still dreaming, still showing up and not surrendering. I’ve shared some organizations below that support Afghan girls’ education if you want to help or get involved. Forbidden from parks, gyms, and even beauty salons. Forced to disappear behind fabric, with only their eyes and hands allowed to exist. Punished for simply being seen, heard, or free. And yet… they resist. They sing. They dream. They climb mountains just to scream their pain into the sky — because the world refuses to listen. The United Nations calls it what it is: gender apartheid. This is not culture. This is not religion. This is oppression. And silence from the world is complicity. We cannot look away.
