Liberace: « When I was a little boy, about 7 years old, I was greatly inspired by a visit from the famous Polish pianist Paderewski who was a friend of my mother’s. He came to our home and played for us and he asked me to play for him. He greatly encouraged my parents to let me follow music for my livelihood; and also he was the one who suggested that I adopt the use of my one name « Liberace ». I shall never forget the number I played for him because it was his own composition… Paderewski’s Minuet. » The Minuet in G from the Humoresques de concert, Op. 14, No. 1 (1887) was one of Paderewski’s most famous compositions, a favorite encore of Rachmaninoff, Hofmann, Friedman, Cherkassky and other Golden Age pianists. Liberace the showman was first a child deeply impressed by the bravura of Paderewski: « I was intoxicated by the joy I got from the great virtuoso’s playing ». Little Wladziu Liberace felt close to Paderewski because he also had Polish origins through his mother – born in Wisconsin in 1919, Liberace would take lessons later to fix the speech impediment he was mocked for and get rid of his Polish accent as he wanted to become an American entertainer more than a concert pianist although he had the talent for it: in 1940, he played Liszt’s Concerto No. 2 with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Liberace was certainly impressed by the pedigree of Paderewski: Poland’s first Prime Minister, delegate signatory of the Treaty of Versailles (1919) and Ambassador of Poland at the League of Nations, concert pianist, composer, millionaire – highest-paid musician of his day –, philanthropist, humanitarian… His success came about in the 1890s touring the U.S. with his dazzling playing, presence and long ginger hair. In 1982, during the 54th Academy Awards, pianist Liberace was invited to present the 1981 Oscar nominees for Best Score, which he did so with his usual exuberant flair, playing all five of the nominated scores, in showman style, on his iconic Baldwin piano, surrounded by the candelabras that his shows were known to use as props to emphasize Liberace's glitz and glam as a performer. In many regards, Liberace's presence at the Oscars was something of an irony. Liberace had a brief acting career in the 1950s that didn't suffice, which is why he relegated his career on the stage and via television appearances. His homosexuality was an open-secret that most ignored because his stage-presence was truly one-of-a-kind and his musical talent was unparalleled. In fact, Liberace was famously known for his "Oscar-night parties," which he would often host when not invited to attend the famed celebration.
