In every muscle contraction, an electrical signal triggers Ca²⁺ release, activates troponin C, enables actin–myosin interaction, and produces contraction. SERCA then pumps Ca²⁺ back into the sarcoplasmic reticulum, allowing the muscle to relax. 🧬💪 A fascinating microscopic process that powers every movement! 🔬✨ 💡 What part of muscle contraction surprised you most? A human embryo... and a dolphin embryo... look surprisingly similar. At least in the beginning. This isn't a coincidence. Humans and dolphins are both mammals, meaning they inherited much of the same developmental program from a common ancestor. During early embryonic development, many vertebrates follow a similar body plan before species-specific genes begin directing them along different paths. (nature.com) At first, both embryos develop structures such as a tail and pharyngeal arches. Despite often being called "gill slits," these arches do not become gills in mammals. Instead, they develop into parts of the jaw, ears, throat, and neck. (embryology.med.unsw.edu.au) As development continues, the similarities disappear. In humans, the hind limbs develop into legs and the brain undergoes rapid expansion. In dolphins, the hind limb buds regress, the forelimbs become flippers, and the nostrils migrate to the top of the head, eventually forming the blowhole. Embryonic development is a reminder that evolution doesn't build every species from scratch. It modifies an existing blueprint.
