Twenty five years of recycling dresses. Little Edie first wore this patchwork paisley print dress in 1937. She wore it again a few years later after modernizing the neckline and sleeves. By 1962 she turned it into a stylish sleeveless smock to hide her slightly larger mature body and paired it with a skirt underneath. Note how the hip-hugging portion of the pattern has now shifted to emphasize the waist as she’s pulled the dress higher. Also by 1962 she was sporting her creative full hair covering.

50 years ago on February 19, 1976 Grey Gardens was released in theaters. The documentary depicts the lives of “Big Edie” & “Little Edie” Beale, the aunt and cousin of First Lady Jackie Kennedy. Grey Gardens was directed by David & Albert Maysles, Ellen Hovde and Muffie Meyer. In November 2012 it voted number one on the list of 100 greatest documentary films of all time by PBS. Grey Gardens inspired a Tony Award winning musical in 2006 and an Emmy Award winning HBO film in 2009.

In 1975 neighbors of Little Edie and Big Edie Beale were dismayed to see their formerly lovely mansion on Long Island go to shambles. It was discovered that they were relatives of Jackie Kennedy and that’s how the publicity started. You have to watch this! Fascinating and a bit heartbreaking you will never forget it.
