So when one of the most recognizable immigrant neighborhoods in America is left off an immigrant enclave map, people are going to notice. This isn’t about taking recognition away from anyone else’s heritage. Every community deserves to have its history recognized. So do Italian-Americans. It’s official: NYC’s Little Italy will be added to Mayor Mamdani’s immigrant enclaves map. Speaking at a press conference today, Mamdani confirmed the update stating: “It’s clearly not an exhaustive list of the more than 200 ethnic communities that call our city home. We’re going to be making additional changes in the future to reflect that, and that includes adding Little Italy to the map.” This comes after Italian American leaders and organizations across NYC, including NIAF, spoke up when Little Italy was left off the original map. Mulberry Street has represented the Italian American story in New York City for generations, and its place on this map is a recognition of everything that heritage has meant to the city. NIAF will keep advocating to make sure our community’s history is recognized and celebrated. 🇮🇹
