Regine walked in wearing a dashiki and Khadijah, Max, and Synclaire immediately broke into an African chant. None of it was in the script.
This is Season 2, Episode 1 of Living Single, titled “Working Nine to Nine-Fifteen,” which aired on FOX on September 22, 1994. The dashiki Regine wore actually belonged to Kim Fields in real life. Queen Latifah, Erika Alexander, and Kim Coles improvised the entire chant on the spot and the cameras kept rolling. Kim Fields’ reaction of smiling and nearly breaking character was completely genuine because she had no idea it was coming.
Four Black women who trusted each other enough to go completely off script and make something iconic out of nothing. That’s the chemistry you can’t manufacture.
Living Single ran on FOX from 1993 to 1998 and was set in Brooklyn, New York.

Khadijah James built Flavor Magazine from nothing and by Season 1 she was already booking Whoopi Goldberg for the cover.
This is Season 1, Episode 10 of Living Single, titled “The Hand That Robs the Cradle,” which aired on FOX in 1993. Synclaire temporarily left her job at Flavor and Khadijah hired an older woman named Mrs. Slocum to fill in at the front desk. Mrs. Slocum answered the phone and announced that Whoopi Goldberg had officially agreed to be on the next cover of Flavor.
A Black woman running her own independent magazine in Brooklyn was landing one of the biggest names in Hollywood for her cover in 1993. Queen Latifah played Khadijah James for five seasons and made it look effortless. The character graduated from Howard University, interned at Essence Magazine, and built Flavor from the ground up. She was the blueprint for Black women in media before most people had a word for what she was doing.
Living Single ran on FOX from 1993 to 1998 and was set in Brooklyn, New York.

Let me tell y’all, I was so excited to get a guest spot on Living Single playing Queen Latifah’s track star baby sister. For weeks I actually trained, I was at the track for hours to prep for this role. By the time we started filming, the script had gone through revisions and I think I only filmed about half a second of running. That’s how it goes though... and to this day I still over-prepare 😂
Shoutout to the cast and Yvette Bowser for having me on the show!
