Vasyl Lomachenko explains how he came to the conclusion that his boxing career was over. #BeltsMatter

Charly Suarez.
Emanuel Navarrete.

On May 2, 2015, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, Vasiliy Lomachenko defended his WBO featherweight title (up to 126 lbs) against Puerto Rico’s Gamalier Rodríguez on the undercard of the historic Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao fight. It was Lomachenko’s first title defense and his fourth professional bout (3–1, 1 KO), while Rodríguez entered the ring on a 17-fight winning streak with a record of 25–2–3 (17 KOs). From the opening bell, Lomachenko completely controlled the fight with his superior speed, combination punching, and signature footwork. Struggling to keep up with the Ukrainian’s movement, Rodríguez repeatedly resorted to low blows, prompting referee Robert Byrd to deduct points from him in both the 5th and 8th rounds. Lomachenko scored his first knockdown with a crisp right hook in the 7th round, and in the 9th round, following another relentless barrage, Rodríguez took a knee and failed to rise before the count reached ten. Lomachenko secured the win by knockout at 0:50 of the 9th round, leading comfortably on all three judges’ scorecards (80–69 across the board) and dominating the CompuBox stats with 227 connected punches out of 586 thrown, compared to Rodríguez’s 55 out of 285.

Vasiliy “Hi-Tech” Lomachenko is one of the most technically brilliant boxers the sport has ever seen. Before turning professional, he compiled an astonishing 396–1 amateur record and won two Olympic gold medals, building a reputation for precision, intelligence, and footwork unlike anything boxing had seen.
When he entered the professional ranks, that brilliance only became more obvious. Lomachenko didn’t rely on overwhelming power—he relied on angles, timing, and movement. He would step around opponents so effortlessly that they often looked confused, earning him the nickname “NoMasChenko” after several fighters chose not to continue on their stools.
His style wasn’t just about winning rounds; it was about solving opponents in real time. Every pivot, feint, and combination was calculated to make elite fighters miss, hesitate, and eventually unravel. For many fans and analysts, peak Lomachenko wasn’t just one of the best offensive boxers of his era—he was one of the greatest technical craftsmen the sport has ever produced.
