Loop Road is a 24-mile long detour in Big Cypress between Miccosukee Indian Village and the Tamiami Trail. Today, it’s known for its hiking, gators, and Lucky Cole’s biker bar. There’s also some really good history. Loop Road was developed for the exploration of oil by the Chevelier Corporation. A small community of speculators, oilmen, and farmers developed along the road. They called it Pinecrest. Life was mostly quiet in Pinecrest – excepting a brief stint as an Al Capone speakeasy – until the mid-20th century when the Department of the Interior started taking land back for its national parks. Enter Skip Preston, a Loop Road resident who fought the inevitable taking in his newsletter, The Pinecrest Freeway News. He not only reported on these political matters but  highlighted parties at haunts like the Gator Hook Lodge where Pinecrest local Ervin Rouse, the fiddler who penned this song, the Orange Blossom Special, made famous by Johnny Cash, lived and played. Take a drive with us around the loop road to see the how Temescal Gateway Park fared in the Palisades Fire. As the fire approached the canyon, rangers, firefighters, and park staff went into action evacuating visitors, sprayed buildings with class A foam, and identified their safety routes. Fortunately, everyone made it out safely. You’ll notice the base of many trees are scorched while their normally green leaves turned brown from the heat intensity but they are still alive! As they were getting fiercely pelted with embers, the majority of the structures survived with little to no damage. On the other hand, there was damage or complete loss of some cabins, storage, and equipment. Just as our local community of Pacific Palisades has begun the rebuild process, we, too, are in the midst of clearing debris, moving forward, to eventually welcome back our friends, neighbors, and visitors to the beloved Temescal Gateway Park.
