HIM – "Join Me in Death"
Released in 1999 (and 2000 internationally) as the lead single from Razorblade Romance, "Join Me in Death" is the definitive "Love Metal" anthem. The song explores themes of eternal devotion, fatalism, and the "Romeo and Juliet" archetype. The narrative depicts a love so intense that the physical world is no longer enough to contain it, suggesting that the only way to truly be together is to leave this life behind. While often misinterpreted as purely promoting self-destruction, Ville Valo has clarified it is a gothic fairy tale about the ultimate sacrifice for love.
Musically, the track is a flawless blend of gothic rock and glam pop. It is instantly recognizable by its haunting, piano-driven intro and the "icy" synthesizer atmosphere that permeates the track. Produced by John Fryer, the song features a steady, mid-tempo beat and a crunching, melodic guitar riff that gives it a heavy yet accessible edge. Ville Valo’s vocal performance is central to its success, moving between a deep, sultry croon and a soaring, emotional chorus that became a staple of the late-90s alternative scene.
The song was a monumental success, particularly in Europe, where it became the highest-selling single in Finnish history and reached No. 1 in Germany. Its legacy is tied to the band’s breakthrough into the mainstream and the popularization of the "Heartagram" symbol. Two versions of the music video exist: the "Ice Version" (themed after the movie The 13th Floor) and a more gothic, candle-lit version. Today, "Join Me in Death" is regarded as a cult classic, celebrated for its dark elegance and for defining the aesthetic of an entire subculture.

HIM ve "Join Me in Death": Love Metal'in Melankolik Zirvesi
Fin gotik rock grubu HIM’in 1999 yılında yayımladığı Razorblade Romance albümünün incisi olan "Join Me in Death", sadece bir şarkı değil, 2000’lerin başında Avrupa rock müziğine damgasını vuran ve Ville Valo’nun "Love Metal" olarak tanımladığı türün en karakteristik örneği olan bir fenomendir. Şarkı, dinleyiciyi ilk saniyesinden itibaren yakalayan o meşhur, basit ama son derece akılda kalıcı piyano melodisiyle açılır; Linde Lindström’ün gitarları arka planda güçlü bir duvar örerken, Ville Valo’nun fısıltıyla başlayıp nakaratta yükselen bariton vokalleri şarkıya gotik bir zarafet ve dramatik bir yapı katar.
