The lowest tides in about a decade graced B.C.'s South Coast on Thursday and will continue to remain low for the next few days.
Tides are caused by the gravitational pull of the sun and moon.
The low tides are a result of a couple of cycles that have lined up perfectly, according to CBC meteorologist Johanna Wagstaffe.
Spring tides, when tides jump from extreme highs to extreme lows in line with the full moon are currently in effect and on Wednesday, the moon was also the closest it will be to Earth this year.
Low tides are a good time to hit the beach and look at intertidal creatures that are usually hidden from view.
Marine biologist Jackie Hildering says it's an opportunity to learn about sea life and creatures impacted by low tides.
She also reminded beachcombers not to touch animals, especially if they're unsure of whether the animal should be in the water and to reconsider taking shells and other treasures home.
"When you're going into an area, it's a privilege. It's an opportunity. It's a fantastic chance to learn and to interact in a way that's respectful,” she said.

The tide may be out at Lake Mulwala but it is still drawing plenty of people to have a look. The dam, on the Murray River at Yarrawonga is currently 6 per cent full as the water is drained out to control an invasive water weed.
This time last year, Lake Mulwala was 99 per cent full and it’s expected to be back to normal by early August. In the meantime, it looks like there will be little business for the Paradise Queen.

Perfect balance! Nobody move! #redningsskøyta "Odd Fellow III" went out last night to a shark that had run aground on a reef near the island of Bolga in Meløy, in the far north of the Helgeland coast. Incredibly, the shark remained standing and balancing on the 20 centimeter wide keel. It shouldn't be possible to be so lucky...I have been involved in several groundings, but have never experienced anything like this, says skipper Jostein Johansen. When the tide came in, the shark floated off the reef and our crews pulled it out into deeper water before it made it ashore under its own power. This was a fun experience for the crew, which consisted of Jostein Johansen, Gøran Pedersen and Andreas Heen.
