Journalism is facing a mental health crisis. And it’s systemic. 🧠 Over 80% of U.S. journalists experienced burnout or chronic stress last year. 📊 Only 2.5% rate their mental health as excellent. ⏳ The biggest barriers to care? No time, no money — and too few culturally competent therapists who understand journalism.* We offer free, confidential, culturally competent, and crisis-informed support for journalists and newsrooms in the U.S.. If you are a journalist, editor or ally and want to get help, message us via Signal at +973-626-7394 or email us at [email protected] * Data from our report "From Crisis to Care". More detalles in the link in our bio.
One of the most important tools every journalist should carry isn’t a notebook, a camera, or a recorder. It’s a therapy plan. This profession exposes you to stories that can weigh heavily on your mind and heart—stories of loss, trauma, injustice, and human struggle. Without a way to process that weight, it will build up. It will affect your focus, your reporting, and your well-being. A therapy plan doesn’t mean weakness. It means preparation. It means resilience. It means valuing your mental health as much as your deadlines. Find someone to talk to. A counselor, a therapist, a mentor. Set up regular check-ins. Have strategies for stress, for burnout, and for the moments when the work hits harder than expected. Because you can’t pour into your stories if you’re running on empty. You can’t serve the public well if you’re not taking care of yourself. A strong journalist protects the story—but also themselves. #journalism #journalist #thestorytellerscompass
The pursuit of truth is a heavy burden. The work of journalists exposes them to several mental health concerns. It is essential that newsrooms are safe places where journalists can support each other without shame. In doing this, we hold the line together. #WSCIJ #HoldingTheLine #InvestigativeJournalism #civicguard #journalismethics #MentalHealthInMedia #MentalHealthAwareness #SupportJournalists #TruthToPower #GovernanceNG

☀️ #SunshineWeek tip! ☀️ 💡 Experts say a key lesson for journalists is that positive change is possible. You just have to seize the moment. People may not think abstractly about public records, but they do care about the results. That includes clean drinking water, safer communities and better policies made possible by records-based journalism. 📰 Advocacy is about delivering meaningful outcomes that matter. Thank you to Frank LoMonte, SPJ Advocacy Committee co-chair and @cnn senior legal counsel, and to Shasta Kearns Moore, journalist and founder of @medicalmotherhood, for sharing their expertise! ▶️ For more, visit “SPJ’s Journalism Advocacy” via the link in our bio.
1/14/26 Nearly $2 billion in federal mental health and addiction funding was terminated overnight. No warning. No transition. Street-level care is shutting down as we speak. This is not abstract policy. This is life and death. Source: NPR. #MentalHealthCrisis #PublicHealth #HealthcarePolicy #AddictionRecovery #MedicaidCuts
