Last night I had the privilege of attending the 2025 Midpac School of Arts Film Showcase where I watched all the hard work from 4 film classes for the past year! It was a roller coaster experience with inspiring documentaries, jump scare thrillers, serious dramas and lot and lots of laughs all wrapped in an intense hour of film! It was incredibly entertaining and I continue to be impressed by all the talent from the program. Congratulations to @coneryos and @kasen.isa for winning Best Cinematography for “Running Paint” last night….such a joy to watch your growth! And a special shout out to @janaparkproducer for continuing to inspire her students every day! 😊😊

Out here on Midway Atoll, our “office supplies” look a little different than most. Instead of computers and coffee mugs, we carry binoculars for spotting seabirds, GPS units for mapping invasive plants, clickers for counting thousands of albatross, and even burrow shoes — giant snowshoe-like gear that keeps us from collapsing fragile bird burrows as we walk. Every tool has a story, from the pliers we use to band birds so we can identify them years later, to the telemetry receivers that pick up faint signals from tiny transmitters, helping us track the hidden movements of wildlife across the atoll.
Behind the scenes, we’ve got our duck lab stocked with veterinary gear for caring for sick Laysan ducks, stacks of survey sheets, field notebooks packed with data, and a toolshed that feels like the beating heart of our work. These items may look simple, but together they help us protect endangered species, restore habitats, and document the natural history of one of the most remote places on Earth.
