What if a museum wasn’t just a single monumental structure, but a constellation of dynamic spaces and living experiences? In the heart of Benin City, we’ve opened the doors to a vital conversation about what a 21st century West African museum can be with “Museum in the Making” - a preview of our first purpose-built building, the MOWAA Institute. Over the past two days, we invited friends and visitors from Benin City and around the world to be part of redefining museum practice with us. From outdoor exhibitions and interactive workshops, to city tours and talks, Museum in the Making sparked new ways to experience what a museum could be and the city beyond. The conversations don’t end there. We believe the future of museum practice starts with building knowledge and connections. How else can we trace forgotten links across African societies, challenge old narratives through new technologies, and bring our heritage to life? Join us in this ongoing conversation. The dialogue is open—and you’re invited to shape it. #museuminthemaking #nigeria #architecture #mowaa #art

Behind the scenes with my amazing team as we brainstorm, laugh, and plan our exhibition project together. Every moment has been a mix of creativity, learning, and teamwork and I’m so proud to be part of it. Grateful for the journey, the ideas we’re building, and the memories we’re making along the way. Otobo Dunoka (Village Square) holds deep cultural significance for iron smelting and the people of Lejja, featuring areas like Okiti Akpuriagedege (Masquerade House) and Ohuma (Sacred Groove). A highlight of this journey was witnessing the Okokoro incarnate being (masquerade), a cherished smelting-related tradition of Lejja. This captivating figure embodies the spirit of a chief smelter, brought to life through its striking appearance. Okokoro mesmerizes all with its human legs, stained with soot, paying homage to the sweat-drenched bodies of the smelters who built this community. MOWAA is opening this November! The Museum of West African Art, Benin City (@mowaaofficial), officially launches on November 11, 2025, introducing Nigeria Imaginary: Homecoming, the expanded Venice Biennale presentation, and unveiling the new MOWAA Institute, a space for research, conservation, and storytelling rooted in West African heritage. At Rare, we care about projects like this because they help preserve our stories while giving space for new ones to grow. It’s the kind of work that strengthens how we see, study, and celebrate African creativity, past and present. A new chapter for contemporary art and culture begins in Benin. 🙌 Check out our previous post on why this project matters. #RarePortHarcourt #MOWAA #WestAfricanArt #NigeriaImaginary

I had the rare opportunity to visit the construction site of Museum of West African Art in Benin. @mowaaofficial It was particularly interesting for me to witness the rammed earth wall construction of the Museum (a tribute to the great earth wall that surrounded the ancient city). Secondly, it was encouraging to see the holding facilities, the laboratories for conservation and research and documentation infrastructure being installed. Located in the heart of Benin City, the MOWAA Campus is an ecosystem of buildings and public spaces designed to nurture, inspire, and showcase artists, scholars and cultural practitioners. The first building, the MOWAA Institute, I learned would be open to the public on 11th November 2025, alongside the inaugural contemporary exhibition, Nigeria Imaginary: Homecoming. MOWAA brings together key areas: Curatorial, Conservation, Archaeology, Material Sciences, Digitization, and Public Programming. #MOWAA’s multidisciplinary approach and commitment to shaping the future of arts, heritage management and cultural practice in West Africa is commendable. It expected to become a dynamic hub for capacity building and knowledge exchange, creating new reference points for learning. Thank you Dr.Akpata Osheni and Engr. Segun Bello for taking me on the tour and for @antmenstudios for hosting me in Benin. #mowaa #museumofwestafricanart #benincity #contemporaryafricanart #africanheritage #rammedearth #heritageconservation #sustainablearchitecture #culturalpreservation #creativeecosystem #nigeriaimaginary #homecoming2025
Amidst all the sudden issues going on around this beautiful museum in Benin City, let MOWAA live. We need a Strong cultural space that will inspire creatives , boost tourism and tell the stories of our people. Working with the mowaa team as a studio assistant was amazing and inspiring under the mentorship of Tunji Adeniyi and I look forward to greater opportunities and collaborations. #letmowaalive #edostategovernment #beninprogress #mowaa #museumofwestafricanarts The sky is enough for all to shine.
