I didn’t notice it at first.
But over time, I realised many of the managers who showed the most empathy at work were also carrying big responsibilities outside of it.
The ones navigating school drop-offs before meetings.
Supporting a partner’s career while managing their own.
Running on little sleep, yet still finding the patience to listen.
They understood something that can’t be taught in most leadership courses:
Behind every Teams icon is a real person.
Someone with a family.
Responsibilities.
Stress.
Dreams.
A life that doesn’t pause when they log into work.
And somehow, that perspective showed up in the way they led.
They didn’t make you feel guilty for being human.
They didn’t wear burnout like a badge of honour.
They gave people grace without lowering standards.
One of the best leaders I ever worked with told me:
“Work is important. But your life is more important.”
I’ve never forgotten those words.
Not every leader becomes more compassionate because life gets harder.
But the ones who do create teams where people feel safe.
Safe to ask for help.
Safe to speak up.
Safe to be a person before being an employee.
And that’s the kind of leadership people remember long after they’ve forgotten the KPIs.

Managers are the most hated role in any company
Interesting Fact:
In many software teams, the team lead isn't just responsible for writing code—they also unblock teammates, answer technical questions, review pull requests, and coordinate with product managers. When they're away, one developer often becomes the unofficial go-to person without any change in title.

Number 2 really got me🥺 Which one stood out to you immediately?
The emotional weight managers carry is second to none. And it usually goes unnoticed and under appreciated. So why do you keep showing up each day? Because you care so deeply about your team and the impact you make in the small moments.
Managing teams isn’t easy, but I’ll share some ways to make it easier. Comment MGMT for some guides you can download today.

How to Successfully Cold Call Hiring
Managers
Learn effective cold calling tips to land interviews.
Overcome nerves and boost your job search confidence.
The clip hilariously captures the gap between what managers say and what reality looks like. It starts with the manager proudly claiming, "Our team is young and full of energy," setting the expectation of a highly motivated workforce. But the very next moment, the scene cuts to the team at 10 AM looking completely exhausted, sleepy, and barely functioning, making the statement instantly ironic.
It's a relatable corporate meme for anyone who's struggled through early morning meetings after late nights, long commutes, or endless deadlines. The exaggerated sleepy expressions perfectly represent how employees actually feel when the workday has only just begun, making this reel highly relatable for office workers.

💡 Manager: "Your work is not visible"
Me the very next day: Challenge accepted😂✨
If my performance isn't visible...
I'll become the brightest employee in the entire office💀🤣
Corporate life teaches you one thing:
Sometimes managers ask for visibility...
Sometimes employees take it too literally! 😭
😂 Tag that colleague who always says,
"Bro... what exactly does 'work visibility' even mean?"

Save this—you'll thank yourself later. 😊
I spent the first decade of my HR career working with managers who acted more like supervisors than leaders. They tracked attendance instead of outcomes, micromanaged every decision, and took credit for the team's hard work.
Then, I finally got the chance to work with a Unicorn Boss.
1️⃣ They ask, "What do you think?" before sharing their opinion. They know that speaking first influences everyone else. They want your honest perspective.
2️⃣ They encourage you to build relationships with other leaders. A weak boss hoards talent. A Unicorn Boss creates opportunities because they know you're ready for bigger responsibilities.
3️⃣ They take responsibility publicly and coach you privately. When a project fails, they say, "This is on me." Behind closed doors, they help you improve.
4️⃣ They make you log off. They don't just talk about work-life balance—they practice it. They'll message you on a Friday evening and say, "Close the laptop. That email can wait until Monday." 🔴
5️⃣ They say, "I don't know" without hesitation. They're secure enough to admit when they need someone else's expertise.
6️⃣ They ask about your career goals—even if they lead beyond the company. They help you build the skills and résumé you'll need for your next opportunity.
7️⃣ They celebrate your PTO. They don't make you feel guilty for taking time off. They encourage you to disconnect and truly recharge. 🌴
Working with a Unicorn Boss completely changed how I define leadership. The best managers don't control people—they empower them, trust them, and help them grow.
If your manager does these seven things, don't leave that team.
You've found a Unicorn Boss.
Because a Unicorn Boss doesn't just manage your work—they invest in your future.
Which of these 7 green flags is the hardest to find in today's workplace?

Build skills, savings, and options outside your employer.
Companies can restructure. Managers can change. Jobs can disappear.
Your career should give you leverage and freedom, not make you dependent on one paycheck.
Work hard. Be professional. But don't forget who you're working for:
You.
