Merry Christmas from Neil Lane Couture. 🎄✨ Today we’re sharing a historical Mauboussin jewel from Neil Lane Couture—Paris, circa the 1930s. Undulating baguette diamonds and round “bubble” emeralds bursting through, capturing the kind of Parisian glamour Neil has always been drawn to—glamour that would go on to influence and echo through Hollywood jewels. Documented in the Mauboussin book and archives, pictured in Vogue (1937) by Horst P. Horst, and exhibited in 1937 at the Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques, this jewel carries a society history all its own: worn by Brazilian socialite Aimée Lopes to Elsie de Wolfe’s legendary 1939 “Circus Ball,” her last grand Paris fête before the war. In 1924 Mauboussin, the historic French jewellery maison, expanded into the US opening a boutique on Park Avenue, New York and then shortly thereafter in Palm Beach, Florida. However following the Stock Market crash of 1929, the aggressively expanding firm found itself having to contract and by 1935 they had closed all their US premises. Randolph J. Trabert & William Howard Hoeffer were young gemstone and jewellery buyers. Hoeffer believed Mauboussin’s situation represented a unique opportunity to form a partnership within the US. Together they applied French jewellery design to American manufacturing and marketing techniques. One of their key designers was Gustave Toth who developed “the first truly American jewel style”. The ‘Reflection’ line was introduced in 1938 and featured a distinctive move away from Art Deco jewellery to embrace a much bolder aesthetic. Avec ses courbes, son camaïeu de violet et l’éclat de ses diamants, ce symbole de la reine de beauté, au même titre que son écharpe, est baptisé « Belle, émouvante et spirituelle, la France ». Sur une structure en argent, ce sont 534 pierres qui ont été serties, dont 500 pierres fines à l’instar d’améthystes et de tourmalines, ainsi que 34 diamants.
