In Mayfair you can find a bustling market inside a beautiful Grade I listed, deconsecrated church.
St Mark’s was deconsecrated in the 1970s after its congregation dwindled after the war.
It was on English Heritage’s Buildings at Risk register for over 20 years before a £5 million restoration project in 2019 by the Grosvenor Estate.
Today it is home to Mercato Mayfair, an artisan food market, as well as being a location for events, workshops and a community space, free to use for local groups.
The heritage at the same time is maintained and restored to a high standard.
Some might find it sad to not see it used for its original religious purpose but, I think, this is far better than it decaying and going unseen.

The opening I was looking forward to the most this year! And I must say I definitely prefer the new location of @crisppizzaw6 (more convenient to travel from all sides of London) and the atmosphere is so fun and chaotic! We even ended up sharing pizza with a table next to us, everyone was in a great mood and yapping away!
They’ve only just opened so be a little patient with your orders but I genuinely think it’s worth it! The vecna grandma pie (£36- feeds 2/3) is quite possibly the best deep dish I’ve ever eaten?? And I don’t eat pork so love that they have a beef pepperoni option (happens to also be halal). The Crisp w6 and tie-dye, the tomato sauce is sharp and sweet sauce it’s soo addictive! Make sure to order plenty of hot honey, hot sauce and garlic on the side, they take the experience on a different level.
I’m already looking forward to going back and remember not all “honest opinions” need to be a negative for it to be true!
