Mirror mazes were popularized in the late 1800s and early 1900s, when they became a standout attraction at amusement parks, traveling fairs, and seaside pleasure piers, building on earlier “hall of mirrors” illusions that had shown up in exhibitions and entertainment venues.
Their rise matched the boom of mass leisure and theme-style attractions, and by the early-to-mid 20th century, mirror mazes were a familiar crowd-pleaser in funhouses around the world, turning simple optical tricks into a full-on interactive challenge.

Octopuses are among the most intelligent invertebrates on Earth, with cognitive abilities that can rival those of many mammals.
They are capable of solving complex puzzles, finding their way through mazes, learning by watching others, and even using tools like coconut shells for protection.
Their strong problem-solving skills, impressive short and long term memory, and remarkable ability to camouflage and deceive reveal a highly advanced nervous system, even though their intelligence is spread across their arms instead of being centralized like ours.
Because their intelligence evolved along a completely different path from vertebrates, scientists often describe octopus cognition as almost alien, yet it still reaches incredibly sophisticated levels.

A slime mold has no brain, no map, and no central planner. Yet it can still find efficient routes through complex mazes. This simulation shows how that happens through pure local interaction.
Each agent follows simple rules: sense nearby signals, move toward stronger gradients, and deposit trail while traveling. Trails diffuse and decay over time, so weak or inefficient routes fade naturally. High-traffic paths get reinforced, and the network converges toward efficient corridors between nutrient sources.
The core math is trail-field dynamics:
∂ρ/∂t = D∇²ρ - λρ + S(x,t)
where diffusion spreads signal, decay removes stale paths, and moving agents continuously deposit new trail. The result is decentralized optimization emerging from local behavior.
This is a powerful analogy for swarm intelligence, routing systems, and bio-inspired computation: global problem-solving without centralized control.

Mirror mazes originated in the late 19th century. The first large-scale mirror maze was created in 1889 by Gustav Castan in Berlin. It works on the concept of “infinite reflections,” where mirrors are placed at 90° or 60° angles to create thousands of copies of a single person, making the path disappear.
The biggest rule of a mirror maze: never fully trust your eyes. In this video, the cameraman got so busy following the guy that he ended up befriending the mirrors himself. By the end, no one knows who is where! Tag that friend who would definitely crash into the glass here.
