Are you using a metronome correctly?
A metronome is a great tool to help improve your time, feel, rhythmic flow, and add challenge to concepts you already know but most people aren’t using it correctly.
The right way to use a metronome is to share the responsibility of the time with the tool. The metronome should keep your time consistent, not force you to play rhythmic patterns accurately. You should aim to practice patterns, licks, really anything with as few beats as possible. It can also be a great tool to change meters or switching between standard time and double time feels.
Here are some of my favorites:
Practice improvising along with the metronome to help your phrasing and harmonic clarity
Practice scales in a different rhythmic pattern than you normally do
Practice articulating a single note and change the meter while playing
How do you practice with a metronome? Put your top tips and questions in the comments. Happy practicing!

One of the greatest hacks I can give an Instrumentalist or any musician is to learn to play with a metronome.

We’ve just started beta testing MPE support in Elastic OSC 🎹✨ — for both iOS and Android!
If you’d like to join, send me a message.
It’s a really powerful new feature! You don’t necessarily need an MPE keyboard — we’ve built in an MPE-ready keyboard mode that sends Velocity, Glide (X), and Slide (Y).
The only thing missing is Press (Z) / Aftertouch, which requires a real MPE controller. Though it's even more fun with a decent MPE Controller, like the Roli Seaboard Block M you see in the video @roli_create
