Building a medical device #60
Officialviralplanet The magnet used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines is extraordinarily powerful—around 60,000 times stronger than Earth’s magnetic field. This immense strength allows the MRI to align hydrogen atoms inside the human body and produce incredibly detailed images of tissues and organs. Because of this power, even small metal objects can become dangerous projectiles near an MRI scanner, which is why strict safety rules are enforced in MRI rooms. What seems like a quiet medical device is actually one of the strongest and most precise magnets humans have ever built, harnessed carefully to save lives and diagnose disease.

POV: you need a 3D animation to explain a shoulder replacement
We're Pulse 3D Media, and since 2010, we've created medical device animations that translate technical innovation into clear visual communication.
This account showcases our work, shares process insights, and provides perspective on medical device visualization.

Last week, Dr. Lombardi received the coolest surprise from one of his patients.
She’s a medical device sales rep for veterinarians and, at her post-op hip replacement appointment, she brought him a tiny hip prosthesis, the same kind she sells for teacup Yorkies and small cats! 🐶🐱
Safe to say, this might be the smallest hip implant we’ve ever seen in the office. Innovation in orthopedics comes in all sizes!
This viral clip illustrates a common pediatric examination technique used to build rapport with young patients.
The Subject
A pediatrician interacts with an infant on an examination table. The physician uses playful gestures and a gentle tone to maintain the child’s engagement and reduce anxiety before the physical assessment.
The Mechanism
The physician utilizes a stethoscope, a medical device designed for auscultation. By allowing the infant to see and touch the instrument, the doctor desensitizes the patient to the equipment before placing the diaphragm on the chest to listen to internal sounds.
The Purpose
The primary goal is to assess cardiovascular and pulmonary health. The doctor listens for a regular heart rhythm and clear breath sounds, ensuring the heart and lungs are functioning correctly without signs of congestion or irregularity.

Faster than a speeding bullet!
🦴 All jokes aside, one of the most important things to do when you have an urgent fracture case (e.g. an open comminuted fracture) come in that may need a special implant (one that doesn't live at your hospital or surgery center) is to call the medical device rep. In some cases, they have to bring a special instrument tray along with the implant that needs to be sterilized prior to the start of the procedure. So there are some instances where they do have to get to the hospital as quickly as possible so that the surgery can proceed in a timely fashion.

Hello, my old friend 👀 And don’t forget to take them with you.
Invisalign® treatment is a series of clear plastic removable orthodontic aligners that gently move patients’ teeth. THIS MEDICAL DEVICE MUST BE ADMINISTERED BY A HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONAL. ALWAYS FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS FOR USE.”

A Spinning Micro-Device Is Redefining How We Save Stroke Patients 🧠
This innovation is a next-generation mechanical thrombectomy device designed to physically break down blood clots from within. Instead of relying solely on suction or static stent retrievers, the device uses controlled rotational motion at the clot site. Once deployed through a microcatheter, its rotating tip fragments and destabilizes the clot while simultaneously improving engagement with vessel walls, allowing for more complete removal.
What sets it apart is precision control. The rotational speed, torque, and geometry are engineered to maximize clot disintegration without damaging delicate blood vessels. This addresses one of the biggest challenges in stroke intervention: incomplete recanalization and clot fragmentation that causes secondary blockages. By improving clot capture and clearance in a single pass, the device significantly increases procedural success rates ⚙️🧠.

Another one of my tools! A shakey vest! (Otherwise known as a cpt or afflow vest)
It is a medical device and It creates rapid and rhythmic vibrations to loosen mucus and gunk. It is often most used with people who have cystic fibrosis. It’s often paired with a cough assist machine in patients who don’t have the strength to cough. I only use this when I’m sick for now but it will be useful to hopefully prevent hospital admissions.
Vein visualization devices help clinicians find veins faster by making what’s under the skin visible in real time.
Finding a good vein can be difficult in children, older adults, people who are dehydrated, or anyone with deeper or less visible veins. These devices use near-infrared light to detect blood flow patterns beneath the skin, then project a live vein map back onto the surface. That means staff can see where to place the needle without repeated probing or guesswork.
The result is fewer missed attempts, less pain, and lower anxiety for patients, while saving time for nurses and doctors in busy clinics and hospitals. Better visibility leads to safer, smoother procedures.

If this was me, I would look into:
1. Outpatient surgery: Good hours with no weekend or holidays. Pre-op, pacu, or OR positions.
2. Concierge nursing: Flexible schedule. One patient at a time. The future of medicine.
3. Research nursing: If you’re burnt out from patient care. Remote options.
4. Pharmaceutical sales: Flexible schedule. Salary + commission. Company car.
5. Medical device sales: Autonomy of your schedule. High income potential. See the difference you make.
I go into more details on 4 and 5 on my Substack and the playbook in my bio 🤍
