MeitY has proposed draft amendments to the IT Rules, 2021 that could significantly expand government control over online speech, platform compliance, and user data retention.
Some key proposed changes include:
1. Longer data retention by platforms, which can weaken the right to erasure and keep your digital history stored for longer
2. Mandatory compliance with MeitY advisories, directions, guidelines, and clarifications, making even non-binding advisories effectively enforceable
3. Expansion of regulation over users sharing news and current affairs content, meaning creators and ordinary users could face publisher-like scrutiny
4. Broadening complaints into “matters”, giving authorities wider discretion in how content is reviewed
The deadline to send your feedback is 29th April 2026.
