An API gateway is the one front door every request passes through before it reaches your services.
Without it, every microservice handles its own auth, rate limiting and routing, and one bad request can slip through and breach them. With a gateway there's a single entry point: it checks every request's identity (auth), throttles traffic when too many hit at once (rate limiting), and routes each call to the right service (users, orders, payments, search).
One door. Auth, rate limit, route. That's how 100 services sit behind a single guarded entrance.
This is what Kong, NGINX, Envoy and Apigee do in production.
Send this to the backend dev who's still exposing services directly.

Most people explain Message Queue vs Message Stream by naming tools like Kafka or RabbitMQ.
That’s not the real difference.
The real question is:
* **Do you want work to be done?** → use a **Queue**
* **Do you want the system to remember an event and let multiple services react to it?** → use a **Stream**
That one mindset shift makes system design answers much stronger in interviews.
If you’re preparing for backend or system design interviews, this distinction is worth remembering.
**Queue = task distribution**
**Stream = event distribution + history**
Which one have you used more in real projects — **queues or streams**? 👇

Kafka Retries Can Create Duplicate Events 🚨
What happens when Kafka receives an event, but the producer loses the acknowledgement?
The producer retries and now the same event can be processed twice.
That’s where Idempotent Consumers come in: unique event IDs, atomic processing, and database transactions help prevent duplicate business operations.
But there’s still one killer edge case… 👀
Can you spot it?

How does Spring Boot actually create a Bean?
You write @Service or @Component… but what happens behind the scenes? 🤔
Spring roughly follows this flow:
@ComponentScan
↓
BeanDefinition
↓
BeanFactoryPostProcessor
↓
Constructor / Instantiation
↓
Dependency Injection
↓
@PostConstruct
↓
BeanPostProcessor
↓
Singleton Cache
↓
✅ Ready Bean
Spring doesn’t simply do new MyService() and stop there. It creates, configures, injects dependencies, initializes, processes, and manages the Bean inside the ApplicationContext.
Understanding this flow makes concepts like @Autowired, @PostConstruct, AOP, and Singleton scope much easier to understand. 🔥

Monolith vs Microservices
Both can work, but the right choice depends on your application’s scale, team and requirements.
Monolith → Simplicity
Microservices → Independent scaling & deployment
Comment “MICRO” for detailed notes 🚀
In a monolith, a function call either returns or throws.
Over a network it can also hang, arrive twice, or succeed while the response gets lost.
Every one of these 10 patterns is an answer to that:
GETTING WORK DONE
→ Saga: each step commits locally. Payment fails? Run compensations BACKWARD - refund, release, cancel.
→ Event Sourcing: store the events, not the state. Replay to rebuild anything.
→ CQRS: normalized model for writes, denormalized for reads.
→ Outbox: order row + outbox row in ONE transaction, then a relay publishes.
SURVIVING FAILURE
→ Circuit Breaker: CLOSED → OPEN → HALF-OPEN. Stop calling what’s already down.
→ Bulkhead: isolate pools. One floods, the others keep serving.
MANAGING THE NETWORK
→ Sidecar: TLS, retries, metrics - in a proxy, not your code
→ Gateway: auth + rate limits once, at the door
→ Service Mesh: sidecars everywhere, one control plane
→ Strangler Fig: shift traffic off the monolith, one route at a time
Three things that cost people real incidents:
1. Sagas have no rollback. Only compensations YOU design. And “refund the payment” ≠ “the payment never happened” - the customer saw the charge, the ledger has two rows. It’s a business decision disguised as a technical one.
2. Outbox exists because “save to DB, then publish to Kafka” is TWO operations. Crash between them and you either lost an event or published one for a transaction that rolled back. Silently. You find out days later when a report won’t reconcile.
3. Strangler fig beats a rewrite because it’s REVERSIBLE. Route 5%, watch, route more, route back if it breaks. A big-bang migration has one decision point and no undo.
And the part nobody says out loud: none of this is free. Every pattern here is complexity you’re adding to buy back what the network took away. If one service still does the job - you don’t need any of it.
Which one did you adopt one incident too late? Mine was the outbox.
Save this before your next design review.
