10/10 road trips w/in 3.5 hours of DC ⇉ 📌𝘀𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 This summer has been go, go, go for us on the local adventure front. We’ve spent the last few weekends bopping around DC, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia & West Virginia …and even though we’ve lived here for almost our entire lives, we’ve been blown away by the insanely gorgeous lakes, roadside wildflowers, and epic sunrises/sets that Mama Nature has put on in the last few weeks alone. We have quite a few flights booked for the second half of summer — which we’re absolutely stoked on, but we’re already feeling that we’re going to miss the mid-Atlantic (younger us would say we’ve lost our minds with that statement, but there’s something about our gorgeous green summer mountains, man, that makes us fall in love all over again every year). Come for cherry blossoms and leave with a history lesson! I can’t believe how many people come to DC for Cherry blossoms but miss this historic monument not too far away from it. If you are in the neighborhood, I highly recommend coming here for a walk, or to just enjoy a peaceful time under the shade of Cherry Blossoms. Are you looking 👀 for some great hikes to do as the weather is getting nicer?? 📌Save these hikes for your spring and summer hiking adventures. I live near Pittsburgh, so I listed these as worth the drive from Pittsburgh. 😊 1. Watkins Glen Gorge Trail (NY)—2.2 mi, out and back, moderate with lots of stairs 😅 No dogs. 2. Old Rag, Shenandoah National Park (VA)—9.4 mi, hard with rock scrambles. No dogs. Permit needed from recreation.gov. 3. Annapolis Rock, AT, (MD)—5.0 mi out and back, moderate 4. Ricketts Glen State Park, Falls Trail (PA)—4.1 mi loop to reach all 21 waterfalls, moderate with many stairs. Use caution ⚠️ as stairs can be slippery. Dogs permitted but may not love it. 😜 5. Audra State Park, Alum Cave Trail (WV)—2.7 mi loop, moderate 6. Sharp Top, Peaks of Otter, Blue Ridge Parkway (VA)—3.1 mi out and back, hard 7. Maryland Heights Trail (MD)—4.5 mi, moderate out and back. Begins in Harpers Ferry, WV. 8. Coopers Rock State Forest, Raven Rock (WV)—2.5 min out and back, moderate 9. Hocking Hills State Park, Old Man’s Cave (OH)—1.0 mi one way loop, options to extend hike 10. Thousand Steps, Standing Stone Trail (PA)—~3 mi, out and back to include Dinkey Shed, Mapleton Overlook and Ledge Quarry. Moderate/Hard. Honorable mention that is currently closed: Kinzua Creek Trail at Kinzua Bridge State Park (PA). It’s one of my favorites, so I threw a clip in at the end 😍. It will reopen in August 2025.
