The heaviest Alice In Chain’s song
Alice In Chains • “Love, Hate, Love” • Hollywood Rock, Rio de Janeiro • January 22, 1993
Hollywood Rock 1993 is often remembered as the band’s last major performance with original bassist Mike Starr. Within months he was out, replaced by Mike Inez, and the band’s internal dynamic shifted permanently. This show sits right at the hinge point: Facelift-era material still central, Dirt not yet released, and the band playing long, exposed versions of songs they would later shorten or abandon live.
“Love, Hate, Love” was already known as the vocal endurance test. Written musically by Jerry Cantrell and Sean Kinney, with lyrics by Layne Staley, it stayed in the set because Layne could still deliver it. The song documents a collapsing relationship and the early consequences of addiction without metaphorical cover. Lines about guilt, loyalty, and self-disgust land bluntly, not poetically. There’s no distance between the subject and the performance.
By this point, Layne was already aware of where heroin led. The song reads less like romance and more like recognition — loving someone while knowing you’re dangerous to them. That is why the song got even heavier as the band evolved.

REMEMBERING MIKE STARR — 60 TODAY • “BLACK CLOUD” HIS FINAL TRACK
