Another dream complete🌈⛰️ Mist Trail you were beautiful and everything I dreamed of 🤍
The Real Adventure Continues Past Vernal Falls 🙌
-
The mist trail is one of the most iconic trails in California. Hiking is three miles round trip to the top of Vernal falls with 1000+ elevation gain. On top of that there is still another waterfall to be hiked 3 miles up, which is Nevada Falls.
“the deadliest hike in the U.S.”
that’s basically what my entire feed looked like before
I hiked Half Dome. so here’s what it was actually like for me.
we did a little over 15 miles with 5,000+ ft of elevation gain in about seven and a half hours round trip. we started from the parking area near Happy Isles. I’d read that this hike takes most people around 10-12 hours, so I was honestly surprised by our time, especially because we weren’t really rushing.
we went up via the Mist Trail. it was technically supposed to be closed for construction when we got there around 7:15 am, with a detour via the JMT, but it was still open,
so we got lucky and went straight through.
personally, I didn’t find the hike itself particularly difficult. obviously, that completely depends on your fitness level,
but for me it felt very manageable.
and the trail itself is BEAUTIFUL.
now, the permit.
you need one to climb the Half Dome cables, and I entered
the lottery THREE times. I actually submitted my winning application from the top of Clouds Rest when I randomly got service up there. I was SO happy when we won because
I really wanted the cables to be part of our Half Dome experience.
the funny part? nobody checked our permits that day. obviously, I’m not saying you should go without one.
that was simply our experience.
and then… THE CABLES.
from below, they look absolutely insane.
it genuinely feels like you’re about to climb straight up a wall.
but the actual climb? surprisingly easy for me.
coming down was actually more uncomfortable because
I’m a little afraid of heights. the first few feet made me nervous, but then I stopped looking down and just focused on my movements.
right foot. left foot. hand. cable. next step.
my biggest advice: bring gloves and, if you’re scared of heights, don’t focus on how high you are. just focus on your next move.
until I saw this 🥹✨

We used @alltrails Pro to navigate these 3 epic trails in Yosemite while backpacking without cell service. It is the one app I can never travel without!
📍Half Dome (permit required) – 15 miles
Bucket list hike that requires a permit to climb cables anchored in granite to the top of one of the most recognizable rock formations in the world.
📍Cloud’s Rest – 14 miles
360 degree views at nearly 10K elevation. A great choice if you want the views without the cables or permit.
📍Mist Trail – 6 miles
Stunning views of Vernal Falls and Nevada Fall up a challenging set of granite staircases. Can be included as part of the Half Dome hike.

SAVE this — 11 must-see spots in Yosemite National Park 🌲🏔️
Yosemite is one of my favorite national parks in California.
I’ve been back so many times, yet somehow it still takes my breath away every single trip.
First visit or fifth, these are the viewpoints, waterfalls, and valley icons that show you Yosemite at its very best 👇
1️⃣ Tunnel View (featured in this reel) — Yosemite’s most iconic view, with El Capitan, Bridalveil Fall, and Half Dome all in a single frame.
2️⃣ Vernal Fall — A thundering waterfall along the Mist Trail. Visit in spring or early summer for the spray and rainbows.
3️⃣ Nevada Fall — Taller and more powerful than Vernal, and one of the most rewarding waterfall hikes in the park.
4️⃣ Glacier Point — A high-elevation overlook with Half Dome and the entire valley laid out beneath you.
5️⃣ Yosemite Falls — One of North America’s tallest waterfalls, at its most dramatic when the spring snowmelt is in full flow.
6️⃣ Sentinel Bridge — The classic place to catch Half Dome mirrored in the Merced River.
7️⃣ Valley View — A wide-open valley panorama of river, soaring cliffs, and the dreamiest golden-hour light.
8️⃣ El Capitan Meadow — Look up to spot climbers on El Cap and truly feel how massive it is.
9️⃣ Washburn Point — That same jaw-dropping valley view as Glacier Point, with a fraction of the crowds.
🔟 Sentinel Dome — A short hike rewarded with a 360° sweep of Yosemite Valley, Half Dome, and the Sierra Nevada.
1️⃣1️⃣ Taft Point — A cliff-edge viewpoint with sheer drop-offs and some of the finest sunsets in the park.

Hiking the mist trail!!
#misttrail #yosemite #waterfallhike #hikingoufit #gorpcore
@henrygolding reached out to me on Instagram messages saying he’d be down to join on a hike so I invited him to summit Half Dome in Yosemite.
We stayed in the valley at camp 4 and prepared supplies for the overnight hike. Starting at Glacier Point, we had a great view of what was to come. With matching Hyperlite packs, we made our way up the Mist trail to a lunch spot and quick dip in the river before continuing up to the cables.
Henry is hilarious and always cracking jokes, especially when he finally saw what we’d be climbing up. We made sure to bring gloves to help with this section and because it was almost sunset, we had the entire place to ourselves. The view at the top overlooking the valley was amazing. We hiked back down to our campsite as night fell. Henry was excited to try out his Hancho Pancho.
The next morning we enjoyed some coffee as the light rose before hiking all the way back down to the valley below. Hiking is a great way to get to know someone and Henry made it a fun trip, thanks for coming along dude.

Mist Trail completely lived up to the hype but there were definitely a few things I wish I knew before I started. 😅 Save this for your next Yosemite trip!

Every single person who’s completed the Mist Trail knows this feeling… 🥹💦
The tired legs disappear.
The endless stone steps are forgotten.
And all that’s left is pure joy standing beneath one of Yosemite’s most iconic waterfalls. 🌊🙌
Watching our 6-year-old throw his arms in the air after making it here is exactly how we all felt! ❤️
If you’re wondering whether families can do this hike… the answer is yes, if you’re prepared and take your time.
🥾 Family Tips:
✔️ Start as early as possible (sunrise is ideal) to beat the crowds and heat.
✔️ Pack plenty of water and snacks.
✔️ Wear proper hiking shoes—the granite steps can be slippery.
✔️ Expect to get wet from the waterfall spray (that’s half the fun!).
✔️ Take lots of breaks and let little legs set the pace.
📍 Mist Trail to Vernal Fall Footbridge & Beyond
• One of Yosemite’s most famous hikes.
• The climb to the top of Vernal Fall is around 3 miles (4.8 km) return with 1,000+ granite steps and roughly 1,000 ft (300 m) of elevation gain.
• Allow 2.5–4 hours depending on your family’s pace.
• The spectacular waterfall views make every step worth it.
This was one of the biggest highlights of our California road trip, and seeing our youngest conquer it made the moment even more special. 💚
