I wasn’t sure if I was going to share about this because I’ve felt overwhelmed the last couple of weeks but if this helps someone with early detection, then it’ll all be worth it. This is my melanoma story (so far). My surgery is tomorrow. It was caught relatively early, but not early enough to avoid surgery under general anesthesia and a skin graft with biopsy of lymph nodes. If it hasn’t spread, it stays at stage two and the cancer is cut out and we’re good. If it has spread, it becomes stage three and we’ll consider options like chemo or drug treatments. Overall though I feel healthy, strong, and optimistic it’s not spread (low percentage chance too!) I’m focusing on gratitude that it was found when it was. If there’s one thing I hope this post reminds you of it’s to book that annual skin check. Even if you have to wait months (or a year) for a dermatologist, it’s worth it, especially if you have lots of moles like I do. Shout out to my boyfriend‘s mother who is a skin cancer doctor and pulled this over back in March. She told me that if it started changing to get a biopsy and that’s what I did a few weeks ago. Take small steps to protect yourself: • Do a full-body mole map or take clear photos on your phone once a year. • Keep track of any changes; color, shape, size, texture. • Wear SPF daily (yes, even on cloudy days). • And limit unprotected sun exposure…tan skin isn’t “healthy,” it’s damaged. Early detection saves lives. My hope is that this surgery is the last part of this chapter and that it hasn’t spread. Dermatologists can sound so weird sometimes when we geek out about benign appearing moles #iykyk One of the things I was taught in residency was that melanomas hardly ever grow hair…till this day it still appears to be true in my practice unless I discover them on the scalp.
