The streets of Monaco have given Charles Leclerc some of the highest highs of his career. On Sunday, they delivered another heartbreak.
He had just renewed the contract😭
After a weekend that had already been complicated by persistent brake issues, Leclerc spent Sunday fighting near the front at his home race. But with just over a dozen laps remaining, disaster struck.
Following a Safety Car restart triggered by Lance Stroll's crash, Leclerc lost control at the final corner and slammed into the barriers, ending his Monaco Grand Prix on the spot.
What happened next said everything about his frustration.
As he climbed out of the Ferrari, Leclerc was visibly furious. Over team radio, the Monegasque immediately pointed towards the brakes, shouting:
"I'm not even going to take the blame! These f*ing brakes!"
The outburst didn't come out of nowhere. Throughout the Monaco weekend, Leclerc had repeatedly complained about braking problems, admitting after qualifying that he didn't know where to brake from one corner to the next because the feeling was so inconsistent.
He had also reported brake concerns during practice sessions.
That is what made the retirement so painful.
This wasn't a driver making an unforced error after a clean weekend. It was a driver who had been fighting the same issue since Friday, battling through qualifying, battling through the race, and then seeing his home Grand Prix end in the barriers while running near the podium positions.
Monaco has given Charles Leclerc some of the most emotional moments of his Formula 1 career. This time, it gave him another heartbreak.
