The Ottoman Empire and Austria-Hungary: centuries of rivalry, then the same fate For centuries, the Ottoman Empire and the Habsburg monarchy were major rivals in Central and Southeastern Europe. They fought repeatedly over territory and influence, including the Sieges of Vienna in 1529 and 1683 and numerous wars across the Balkans and Hungary. But by the 19th century, the balance had changed. Both empires were struggling with rising nationalism, economic problems, and competition from newer European powers. Austria-Hungary increasingly worried about Russia and nationalist movements in the Balkans, while the Ottoman Empire was steadily losing territory. Then came World War I. Both empires ended up on the same losing side, fighting against the Allied powers. By 1918, the Ottoman Empire and Austria-Hungary were both collapsing. Austria-Hungary dissolved into several new states, while the Ottoman Empire was dismantled and its remaining territory in Anatolia eventually became the Republic of Turkey. They had spent centuries fighting over Central Europe and the Balkans, only to collapse within the same year at the end of World War I. Lowkey, two empires that spent centuries fighting over the same neighborhood ended up meeting the same fate: both disappeared from the map in 1918.

The late Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, was an ardent anti-communist.
He understood that the alliance between Islamism and radical left-wing movements was dangerous for the constitutional monarchy of Iran that was slowly and organically transitioning towards a democracy.
Argentina joins Spain in the World Cup final, and it looks less like an international match and more like a very competitive family reunion.
Charles V ruled Spain during the first Spanish settlement at Buenos Aires in 1536. The territory that later became Argentina remained connected to the Spanish Monarchy for nearly three centuries, eventually forming the heart of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata.
Spain and Argentina are now distinct nations with their own identities, but the shared inheritance remains visible in their language, names, architecture, Catholic traditions and football culture.
“Sir, Spain and Argentina are playing in the final.”
“Tremendous. Against whom?” 🇪🇸🤝🇦🇷

In 2019, Swiss man Jonas Lauwiner declared himself “King of Switzerland” in a symbolic coronation. Switzerland does not officially recognize any monarchy, but Lauwiner later gained attention for something far stranger than the title.
Using a legal loophole involving ownerless land, he began claiming abandoned or unregistered plots across the country. Reports say he now controls around 148 plots, including dozens of roads, scattered across Switzerland.
His “kingdom” has no official political power, but his land claims are real enough to cause disputes with local residents and authorities. What began as an eccentric stunt has turned into one of Switzerland’s strangest property-law controversies.

Muammar Gaddafi was a prominent and controversial figure in modern Middle Eastern and African politics. He came to power in 1969 after overthrowing Libya's monarchy and ruled the country for more than four decades. Gaddafi promoted Arab unity, African cooperation, and a unique political ideology outlined in his "Green Book." Supporters viewed him as a leader who used Libya's oil wealth to improve education, healthcare, and infrastructure. Critics, however, accused him of authoritarian rule, suppressing opposition, and involvement in international conflicts. During his leadership, Libya experienced both development and isolation. He later tried to rebuild relations with Western countries in the 2000s. In 2011, during the Arab Spring, protests escalated into a civil war that ended his rule. His legacy remains debated some see him as a revolutionary nationalist, while others remember him as a dictator. His impact on Libya and regional politics continues to be discussed today.
