I bought Monster clay to test it. I certainly like it a lot, it’s not sticky, and it keeps the heat long enough to work with it. But when it starts to harden I find it hard to get the hang of smoothing the surface. Any tricks you can give me? #monsterclay #eye #sculptingclay #testingclay #myartwork

My favorite tips for working with Monster Clay ⬇️ would love to hear your opinions too - what are your best tips and tricks for working with an oil-based clay like Monster Clay? 1. Monster Clay and other sulfur free oil-based clays are excellent for sculpting. When you warm it up, it's easy to spread around and once it cools, it's easy to carve. (note; oil-based clays never dry - so they're great if you're planning to take a mold and cast the piece from another material. 2. You can smooth the surface with different methods. You can use a tool with a guitar string loop (easy to make at home) to even out the surface of the sculpture. It leaves tiny scratches from the texture of the string, evening out high and low points which are hard to notice otherwise. 3. You can then lightly heat up the surface with a kitchen torch - this smooths the surface to perfection. Be careful though, as you can very easily accidentally smooth out your details, too! You can also smooth out the surface with a brush dipped in mineral spirits. 4. You can also warm up Monster Clay until it's almost liquid, and pour it into a silicone mold. Let it cool completely before removing it from the mold. 5. If you want to attach pieces together, warming up the surface with a kitchen torch is a great method, too. ❤️‍🔥 I love to use Monster clay when creating masters for film prop making. And for other type of sculpting projects, too. You could sculpt intricate cosplay pieces too, take a mold and cast from another material. It's a great material for all kinds of craft and maker projects.

New video for the Sharkor project with @furior.dinolazer ! I broke all my plaster molds to take the sculpture inside. I prefer to sculpt 80% in monster clay, cast in polyurethane and finish all details with epoxy paste. The Monster Clay is fully covered in Magic-Sculpt. I enjoyed this sculpting method a lot. I used Monster Clay as a rough draft and slowly built up each section with Magic-Sculpt until the entire piece was fully covered. The result was a rock-solid structure—a shell that protects the clay inside. I got the idea to sculpt in this way after @spiderzero class. ⁣ ⁣ In the Reel, I am applying a few passes of dark wash just to get a feel for the overall look and to determine if I need to edit any parts of the sculpture. “Wild Hyena” was my submissions for the Drone Blank show by @nerviswr3k and hosted by @ghostfoxtoystoreandgallery. Sadly I wasn’t able to finish him for the show, details below, but you can check out all the other amazingly talented artists this Saturday at Ghost Fox Toy Store & Gallery in El Paso! It’s a huge lineup so you’re not going to want to miss out! Okay, so I was going to make a mold and pull a few resin casts out of him but sadly this guy did not survive the mold casting process. While pulling out the first half of the mold, the monster clay blocking out the second half ripped the clay bits apart. I was particularly proud of this sculpt, and I’m very bummed I wasn’t able to bring him to life in time. But I saved all the pieces for reference, and I plan to re-sculpt him when I get the time.
