In the ancient mossy forest of Yakushima, Japan, I recorded the bioelectric signals of moss growing on the roots of a great cedar. Yakushima is one of the wettest places in Japan. It rains here so often that locals say it rains thirty-five days a month. That constant moisture has produced one of the most remarkable forests on Earth, blanketed in over six hundred species of moss and home to some of the oldest trees alive. Hayao Miyazaki spent time here before making Princess Mononoke. You feel why. To reach this recording I walked along a trail that passes directly beneath the roots of the trees themselves. The path doesn’t go around the forest. It goes through it, under arches of root, between living walls of moss-covered stone. Mosses are the oldest land plants on Earth. They were among the first life to leave the water and try the air, around four hundred and seventy million years ago. They don’t have roots or veins or flowers. They absorb water directly through their leaves. They are still doing what their ancestors started doing nearly half a billion years ago, and they are doing it on top of trees that are themselves thousands of years old. What I’m holding this device against is one layer of life resting on another, both quietly making sound, neither aware of me.
