AXIS SYLLABUS - MANUELA MARTELLA
16.-18.1.2026 // VIENNA
re-think-dance
The Axis Syllabus© // Movement notation // Contact Improvisation
I move as I think my body, that is, according to my personal body image. However, if this is far from any reality, my thoughts will stand in my way. That's why re-thinking is so often so important, even if it takes time. During this workshop we will playfully and analytically approach dynamic movement sequences. We will put visual material and anatomically based information in direct relation to our personal bodily experience. In this endevour, the Axis Syllabus Notation System can help sharpen our senses and bring clarity to our body sheme and our movement language. In Contact Improvisation we will test our sense of orientation, the reflexive embodiment of our adaptability and our breadth of awareness. Eventually, we will gradually approach more complex movement motives, from standing to rolling and from jumping to falling and everything that may/should/could happen in-between.

Labanotation: The System of Analyzing and Recording Movement
Ann Hutchinson Guest
https://articulo.mercadolibre.com.ar/MLA-1930349454-labanotation-the-system-of-movementann-hutchinson-guest-_JM
A definitive book for students of dance and movement studies, Labanotation is now available in a fourth edition, the first complete revision of the text since 1977. Initiated by the movement genius Rudolf Laban, and refined through fifty years of work by teachers here and abroad, Labanotation, the first wholly successful system for recording human movement, is now having the effect on ballet and other forms of dance that the prefection of music notation in the Renaissance had on the development of music. This book makes it possible to record accurately, for study and reconstruction, the great dance creations of the theater, as well as such diverse activities as time/motion studies for industry, personnel assessment and physical therapy. So comprehensive that it can indicate even facial expressions, the system is also simple enough for a child to learn easily as an integral part of athletic or dance training.

As a behavioural researcher my particular skill set includes frame-by-frame analysis using movement notation. Video is generally 30 frames per second so a 5 minute video takes a lot of time to go through! This training means I see more on average than most people when watching dogs interact because I know how subtle and quick some important movements are. 🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾#behavior #dogtraining #dogsofinstagram #research #dogvideo #behaviormodification

Playfully kinetic yet almost magically elusive and entirely about a body in motion activated by viewer participation are the new elegant metal and holographic sculptures by the artist and choreographer#madelinehollander on view in her #soloshow called #Entanglement at @bortolamigallery “Entanglement continues Hollander’s expansion of movement notation, transcribing dance and complex patterns as a series of moving objects.
At the center of Entanglement are six new sculptures composed of joined parabolic mirrors and a rotating base, generating the optical illusion of a floating object just above their surface, like a dervish mirage. Here, the mirrors house a sequence of unique ‘action figures’. Each represents a singular choreographic movement that collectively creates a 24-sequenced holographic choreography over the course of the exhibition. They are spectral ballerinas pirouetting in a jewelry box, springing into motion with the viewer’s glance.Three large aluminum trefoil knots punctuate the exhibition, awaiting activation. Each entwined mobius-like form is composed using a formula which optimizes its rolling capabilities; once nudged into action they have the capacity to roll perpetually. The variable equations encoded in each knot inscribe their movement with a unique gait and wobble.” #contemporaryart #contemporarysculpture #kineticsculpture #artisttoknow #choreography #tribecagalleries #winterartshow #artmuseselects
Sand, 2024, on view @friezeofficial with @tjboulting in London.
These new sculptures bring movement notation drawings that focus on repetitive quotidian movements into relation with 3D space. Sand, depicts the act of sanding a surface translated into a line, with temporal persistence, lingerings, creating densities of volume and color. #sculpture
