Their voices may be quiet, but their impact echoes across borders! 🎤 #UNseen: The Voices Behind Diplomacy 🎧🌍 Ever wondered how world leaders and delegates understand each other during meetings? 📍 Today we’re going backstage into the world of UN interpreters at UN Geneva. Three key interpretation styles keep global dialogue flowing: 1️⃣ Simultaneous – real-time from soundproof booths 2️⃣ Consecutive – after the speaker finishes 3️⃣ Whispering (or chuchotage) – for private or one-on-one settings #InterpretationMatters #UNGeneva #UNseen #BehindTheScenes #Multilingualism

Interpreters are essential to the work of the United Nations. They do far more than convert words from one language to another. They make dialogue possible, help build understanding across cultures and ensure that every voice can be heard equally in multilateral diplomacy. In many ways, they are among the quiet enablers of cooperation, negotiation and peace. One of the most frequent questions I get asked is “How many languages do you speak?” and “Where are you from?”. 1. I speak six different languages but two of them (German and Swedish) are not from the same never have to think about them / never make a mistake in them-level so I often say I speak five. Although my German is pretty on par with someone who’s been studying the language for years if you drop me back for three days in Berlin. Swedish is baaaaasic. My biggest pet peeve I guess is when someone says “Oh, I speak Spanish too” because they know the phrase “Hola! Cómo estás?” 2. I get it, the accent, it’s hard to place. It’s somewhat Dutch but not as pronounced and it makes people wonder. I feel I get laughed at in every language with my accent lol. The Spanish will make jokes about my “r” whereas the Latinx community in the US will tell me I sound “so Spanish”. Even in my home country Belgium, I’ve been made fun of my “r” sounds; a consonant that can be easily hidden in English but in the US it’s the overall accent mystery (only admiration however from the Americans 🙏). The French will say that I sound very Belgian, where we speak French indeed, it’s just not my first language. The biggest tip for learning a new language: MOVIES! It’s the oldest (and cheapest) trick in the book. Making your hearing accustomed to new sounds while getting visual support of context + subtitles. By the age of eleven I already spoke decent English just from listening to English through songs and series on television without any single English class ever. I wish I did a better job with my own daughter but she pretty much refuses to watch any Peppa Pig episode or Disney movie that is not in English. Below is a list of my ALL time favorite movies in a variety of languages. - 🇮🇹 La Vita E Bella - 🇫🇷 Anatomie d’Une Chute - 🇫🇷 L’Auberge Espagnole - 🇫🇷 Le Fabuleux Destin d’Amelie Poulain - 🇩🇪 Lola Rennt - 🇧🇪 The Broken Circle Breakdown - 🇪🇸 La Piel Que Habito - 🇪🇸Honestly, ANYTHING Pedro Almodovar: Hable Con Ella, Todo Sobre mi Madre... - 🇺🇸🇫🇷🇩🇪🇮🇹 Inglorious Bastards … More to follow in comments as Instagram is limiting the length of this Ted Talk lol
