Rewriting power starts with the stories we tell, the voices we amplify, and the systems we dare to reshape. Literature is not only art. It is industry, infrastructure, and influence. It shapes how communities see themselves, how future generations understand identity, and how power is challenged, reclaimed, and reimagined. Join us for an inspiring evening of conversation, reflection, and literary leadership as we explore the role of literature in shaping culture, education, community, and change. I had the great joy of sitting with best-selling authors Celeste Ng, Malinda Lo, and Tui T. Sutherland to discuss An Act regarding free expression (H.3594) on @massfreedomtoread Advocacy Day. As an avid reader, I have to admit I had a bit of a fan-girl moment being in conversation with these incredible authors. I remain committed to protecting the autonomy of our libraries, ensuring they can provide accurate, historical literature that recognizes diverse identities, and safeguarding the constitutional rights of students and families. With freedom of speech and information under attack from the federal government and from organizations fueled by hate, it is more important than ever for us to step up and protect the public’s access to inclusive and diverse collections of books and materials #freedomtoread #books #libraries #cambridgema

This month, our students are exploring the power of literature 📚✨ — and this week, poetry has taken center stage 🎭📝 In one class, students read and discussed the powerful words of Maya Angelou 📖, reflecting on how poetry can express identity, resilience, and hope 💭🌱. In another, creativity took over as students experimented with blackout poetry 🖊️⬛, transforming existing text into entirely new poems by selecting and highlighting meaningful words ✨ Through these activities, students practiced more than reading and writing ✍️. They learned to interpret language 🔍, express ideas and emotions 💡❤️, and experiment with creativity in English 🎨 Because poetry shows students something powerful: that language isn’t just something we study; it’s something we can shape, feel, and make our own 🌟 #chranioti #literaturemonth #poetryintheclassroom #seniorclasses #languageinaction educationwithpurpose criticalthinking empoweredvoices 📚📝✨
✨ Every seat was taken for today’s presentation on the anthology Talking to the Girls: Intimate and Political Essays on the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire! ✨ The program included the sharing of research, poetry, and personal essays that honored the memory of the immigrant girls and women who perished on March 25, 1911. We heard from Edvige Giunta, the anthology co-editor, who spoke of the importance of gathering in community and elevating the stories of all those affected by this tragedy. NJCU student Sophia Burns paid tribute to Vincenza Bellotto, a sixteen-year-old worker who was a Hoboken resident. Anthology contributor Paola Corso shared poetry as a powerful act of remembrance, while contributor Jacqueline Ellis conveyed the crucial work of inculcating intersectional activism among our students. During the moving Q&A, we heard from audience member John Purkert, a relative of Vincenza’s, who relayed how the fire deeply affected his family. It can’t be said enough the pivotal role that the Triangle Fire played in steering major domestic labor reforms. We thank Edvige, Sophia, Paola, and Jacqueline for taking the past and sharing a written memorial to the Triangle victims. “They left with their names and their light...” ~Paola Corso
