Calling all fruit lovers and volunteers! If you want to spend some time under the fruit trees in Toronto's urban orchard this summer, this post is for you. There are many ways to get involved with our Fruit Picking Program; the most straightforward are as a Fruit Picker, Pick Leader or Tree Registrant! 🍎 FRUIT PICKING is a great way to become acquainted with the city’s urban orchard, spend time outside in lush backyards, meet new people, and enjoy fresh, locally grown fruit in your own neighbourhood. It’s pretty dreamy! 🍒 If you enjoy facilitating groups of people, or offering leadership in community, the PICK LEADER role might be up your alley. Pick Leaders receive training to choose the time and date of the pick event, bring necessary picking equipment, teach volunteerrs how to pick fruit, and deliver donations to community agencies. 🌳 If you (or someone you know!) has a fruit tree with an over abundance of fruit - becoming a TREE REGISTRANT and sharing your bounty means that we can pick even more fruit, and share it with even more Torontonians who might not have equitable access to fresh produce. To support the expenses of running as many pick events as we can every year, we invite our community to contribute annually to our project, helping us continue to share the fruits of our collective labour. The recommended shares are $40 for Tree Registrants and $10 for Fruit Pickers. We waive shares for anyone, no questions asked, and especially encourage Indigenous folks and Youth to utilize this option. 🌱 LEARN MORE & SIGN UP AT NOTFARFROMTHETREE.ORG! #NFFTT #NotFarFromTheTree #HealthyHarvest #FruitTreeCare #OrchardPeople #UrbanOrchard #TorontoUrbanGrowers #TorontoUrbanAgriculture #FruitGleaning #AssociationOfGleaningOrganizations #TorontoVolunteering #VolunteerToronto by @nfftt

Phew…what a bountiful season for NFFTT! With the cold October weather comes the end of our 18th summer picking and sharing fruit. 🍂 This is now a quieter time at NFFTT! Our small staff team will be spending the colder months reviewing the past season, tending to improvements for the next season, and expanding our programming. Our growth relies on your voice! 🌟 Please share your thoughts on how you found the season through our annual end-of-season feedback survey. It should take approximately 10 minutes to complete! See the survey link in our bio. by @nfftt

The apples are calling! This bright red beauty snapped by our wonderful Pick Leader Trainee Tracy, and was a part of a harvest near the bottom of Allan Road where a massive 284 lbs of fruit was harvested! In the spirit of not far from the tree this fruit was shared not with one but tree I mean THREE! of our non profit agency partners! Well done volunteers! Want to see your pic's in the next roundup?! The whitish surface (sometimes called bloom) that is so familiar on concords is also found on many other grapes and is actually called epicuticular wax! It is indeed a wax that helps the fruit to keep longer so don't wash it off until you're ready to snack (or at all, it's edible!)! Want to see your pic's in the next roundup?! Join Not Far From The Tree next Wednesday Sept 23 at 12pm at Grange Park for the Grassy Narrows River Run Rally. Look out for our green shirts and walk with us in support of Grassy Narrow First Nation's (@grassy.narrows.solidarity ) sovereignty and resistance to settler-colonial expansion. Thank you to @foodshare's leadership and call to action for food security & justice sector friends! As they said: clean water is food justice. Everything in our food system relies on water. The fruit we harvest and share in Toronto may be a small part of the bigger food system, but we know that the health of watersheds on Turtle Island impacts the health of all beings who share the land and its gifts. For details about how to sign up and volunteer on the day of the rally, find more details at the link in our bio. Friends outside of the GTA can find bus transport options from Guelph, Kingston, Kitchener/Waterloo, Hamilton, Peterborough, Barrie/Orillia or London and St. Catherines. by @nfftt
