The last nomads of the Himalayas 🇮🇳🏔️🐏
📍 The Changpa are pastoral nomads who live in the Changthang Plateau of eastern Ladakh, a vast high-altitude cold desert near the Tibetan Plateau. Sitting above 4,500 meters, this is one of the harshest inhabited regions on Earth, with brutal winters and extreme isolation.
⛺️ The Changpa don’t live in permanent villages. Their homes move with the seasons. They migrate across the open plains of Changthang with their herds, setting up temporary tents wherever grazing land and water are available.
🐐 Life here revolves around animals. Pashmina goats, sheep, and yaks provide food, income, and warmth. Every day starts early, animals always come first, and everything they own must be light enough to move.
🔥 Inside their tent, the fire never goes out. Meals are simple, days are long, and life follows the rhythm of weather, light and land rather than time.
📆 Spending time with them was a reminder of how different “home” can look and how little is actually needed when everything has a purpose.

I come from Altai people, specifically Kypchak tribes. We used to be warriors. In the 12th century my people were invaded by ChingizKhan which had a big impact on our physical features

Mongolia has more horses than people.
Out here, a horse isn’t a hobby, it’s survival.
We had ridden over 150 km across the steppe in -10°C, heading toward hot springs to clean up. At the top of a frozen valley, our luggage horse panicked, ripped loose, and disappeared into the forest.
I chased him. Lost the saddle. Lost the horse. Lost myself between branches and ice.
Galloping down the valley, I suddenly met a nomad on horseback with a fur coat made from his own hunt, rifle in hand. I was riding fast. He didn’t know who I was or what I wanted.
He raised the rifle and shouted.
In that moment, I wasn’t a traveler, I was a stranger charging through his land in winter.
I stopped. Shouted “морь!” (horse). Pointed to the forest. Tried to explain with hands and breath turning to ice.
He signaled me away.
Further down the valley, another nomadic family helped me. They tracked the horse through broken branches and hoof prints I would never have seen. Found him. Brought him back.
Later, I was sitting in their yurt eating with them, and wrestling like brothers.
Mongolia is harsh. Independent. Proud.
But also deeply generous if you approach with respect.

Nobody really talks about how heavy a backpack feels when you’re solo traveling.
It starts as freedom—just you, your bag, and the world ahead. But somewhere along the way, it’s not just clothes you’re carrying anymore… it’s exhaustion, memories, goodbyes, and everything you didn’t expect to feel on the road.
And still, you keep moving.
So tell me… as a backpacker, is it still freedom if it gets heavier with every new place?

Is it finally time to stop living life as a nomad? 🌍 The past two years have been absolutely incredible, I’ve gotten to see and experience so many amazing things, but as my business has continued to grow, it’s become increasingly unsustainable. Last year my job had me change continent 26 times - that’s once every two weeks, and inevitably that took its toll on both my mental and physical health. So I’ve decided it’s time to slow down. I still want to travel maybe 50% of the time, but I want a home to go back to in those moments inbetween. I don’t know if korea is the right choice for me, but it’s the option I’m currently exploring. It might take months to figure this out, but I’m so ready for this next step and the new adventures that will come with it 🫶🏼🇰🇷 #nomadlife #nomads #nomadic #nomad
Just kidding. He loves it. ✈️ Kev and I could not have more opposite jobs. As a cardiologist, his schedule is jam-packed. He sees patients all day and comes home to mounds of paperwork at night. As a content creator, my schedule is flexible and I can dictate how much or little I work. I can create from anywhere at anytime, while Kev has to be in person. My job is creative. His is regimented. The list of differences goes on. Throw in 5 kids and the trickiest part is figuring out how to nurture and prioritize our marriage.
In 2024, I traveled to 23 cities and Kev was with me for 21 of them. It sounds impossible but we made a way. Kev worked weekends and overtime, and took calls in foreign time zones. I organized the kids if they were coming with us or made arrangements for childcare if they were staying back. It’s not easy making time to travel and I realize it’s an incredible privilege, but we value our time together and if we don’t make the effort, I just know it won’t happen.

We started this hike at 2 a.m., not a problem when the sun never sets. It was a little over 12 miles all told, and we never saw another person.
I could get used to hikes like that.
