SKUAST-K Vice Chancellor Calls for Stronger Plant Health Intelligence at NIPHM Conference in Hyderabad; Visits ICRISAT for Strategic Collaboration Srinagar: On the first day of the National Conference on “Innovations in Plant Health Management for Resilient Agriculture and Agri-Export Promotion,” being organized by the National Institute of Plant Health Management (NIPHM) from 26-28 February 2026, the Vice Chancellor of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K), Professor Nazir Ahmad Ganai, delivered the keynote address. In his address, he emphasized the need to transition from reactive pest control approaches to predictive, intelligence-driven plant health governance. In his address, he called for strengthening and fully operationalizing the National Integrated Plant Health Intelligence Mission (NIPHIM) and emphasized the urgent need to transition from reactive pest control approaches to predictive, intelligence-driven plant health governance. Highlighting India’s agricultural scale, Prof. Ganai noted that the country produces over 330 million tonnes of food grains annually, while horticulture output has recently surpassed food grain production, reaching around 369 million tonnes. Despite these achievements, he cautioned that pests and diseases continue to cause substantial crop losses. Referring to globally accepted scientific estimates that 20-40 per cent of crops are lost annually to biological stresses, he observed that even conservative domestic estimates translate into significant economic and ecological costs in terms of lost produce, wasted irrigation water, fertilizers, energy, and farmer effort. The Vice Chancellor pointed out that the biological risk landscape is rapidly evolving due to climate variability, global trade, and increasing pest resistance. India has witnessed the spread of invasive and emerging pests such as the Fall Armyworm in maize-growing regions, the Tomato leaf miner in vegetable crops, periodic incursions of the Desert locust in western India, and the Apple blotch leaf miner in temperate horticulture belts. These developments, he said, demonstrate that pest threats are becoming
