Today is national physician suicide awareness day ~ #NPSA Suicide affects doctors at a rate that is 1.4-2.3 x higher than the general population (NAMI) In a Culture that Awards toughness - undergoing rigorous training with unrealistic standards of perfection- weight of the career itself - an extensive amount of stress that leads to burnout and a culture that perpetuates the idea that taking a step back or engaging in self care means weakness or a lack of passion for the field - we need to highlight this issue. We need to check on each other. We need to let go of the unrealistic standards of perfection. We need to make residency training consist of a humane amount of working hours with support. 988 is the new suicide crisis line. You’re not alone. Talk to someone.
