Tompkins Square Park has been one of the most important meeting places in New York City skateboarding for decades. The blacktop in the East Village has been skated since the 1980s, hosted a SHUT Skateboards contest in 1989, and eventually became known simply as the TF — the Training Facility. (Jenkem Magazine) Before New York had skateparks everywhere, Tompkins was where people met up, learned tricks, dragged out homemade boxes and flat bars, and got ready to go skate the actual streets. Generations of New York skateboarders came through here, including Harold Hunter, Yaje Popson, Jake Johnson, Zered Bassett and Tyshawn Jones. (Wikipedia) The obstacles have always been part of the character of the place too — homemade ledges, rails, ramps and whatever random piece of New York City infrastructure could survive being skated for a few weeks. In 2019, skaters even organized to save the asphalt when the city planned to cover it with synthetic turf. Haven’t been able to go skate because of all the snow and ice lately 🥶. If you’re a skater from nyc then you understand my pain 🥲. This winter has made skateboarding harder than ever — no skate to work vids either, i’ve literally just been walking to work like a normal person lately 😭. But i’m not gonna let winter stop me completely. It was still cold… but warm enough to try, so i took the opportunity. And luckily, i finally got a day to have fun on my skateboard again. Which just so happened to be my birthday 🥳. Definitely not the flashiest birthday, but i got to do what i love most — ride my skateboard 🛹 And tbh? 🗽We’re getting ready to hit up Staten Island next week for @seenycofficial so we had to pay Tariq Zaid a visit at @richmondhoodco ! Tariq took his Brooklyn roots to Staten Island and cemented his journey there, opening an independent skate shop in 2007. For nearly two decades they’ve been selling streetwear and skate goods, showing love to their Wu-Tang Clan peers and hosting tons of cultural art programming for the community.
