Plant and mineral based dyeing for SS27
Natural dyeing involves a wide range of variables. Each region offers different materials, and small factors such as water pH can significantly affect the result. Using the same set of ingredients can still produce different outcomes depending on subtle changes in process.
Working directly with these variations allows us to expand the range of outcomes beyond what is typically expected. Our focus is not on preserving the practice as it is, but on using it as a base to extend and rework the process through continued experimentation.
Natural dyeing is not just about creating colours; it is a journey of preserving heritage, embracing sustainability, and celebrating the beauty of traditional artistry.
Here’s a glimpse into the world of our artisans from Wrukshatone, along with their stories and the passion behind every natural shade they create.

A shade of Matcha.
Green has always been a unique color in the world of natural dyeing. Despite it being the dominant color in plants, green from a single plant extraction is one of the rarest colors to get.

I made an app about natural dyeing. I actually created the very thing I would have wanted if I were starting out today.
I poured over 10 years of intense research into it and created a hybrid of an interactive recipe builder, a book, and an online course.
In this app, you can choose a color and the fabric you're working with, and it will give you a recipe card with step-by-step instructions. Or pick a guide to learn from. Or choose a dyestuff you want to work with.
The possibilities are endless. It's like having me there, holding your hand, but digitally!
Try out our new app and discover that natural dyeing can be so much easier than you thought it would be.

That nervous feeling before every bundle opens? Still there. Every single time.
With natural dyeing, the earth decides what comes out - not us. Heat, minerals, moisture, time. Each one shifts the result. That's not a flaw. That's the whole point.
What does that kind of anticipation remind you of? Drop it in the comments - we're curious 🌿

August marked 10 years since I started my practice of Eco-Printing & Natural Dyeing. What began as an experiment in my garden, grew into a fascination that quite literally took me further than anything else in my life. I traveled first to Mexico, then Guatemala, Morocco, India, Japan, and even Iceland in search of new colors, new ways of seeing, and new methods of unlocking what I call the secret world of color living around us. As I work to rebuild my home studio, I can't wait to see where this journey takes me next. Reflecting on this path so far has reminded me of the absolute joys of my first few years working in my garage studio, surrounded by dogs, my garden just a few steps out the door, Lucinda Williams always blaring from my tiny Bluetooth speaker.
If you’re just beginning your journey into natural dyeing, acorns are a wonderful place to start.
Rich in natural tannins, they release their color easily and can produce beautiful, rich brown shades with a relatively simple dyeing process.
But that’s only the beginning. By changing the fabric, mordant, temperature, dyeing time, or dye concentration, you can create an entire palette of earthy tones—from warm beige and honey to deep chocolate brown and soft gray-browns.
This versatility is what makes acorns a favorite among both beginners and experienced natural dyers alike.
What shade would you create first? 🤎

Some people mistakenly assume that Ayurvastra is the same as natural dyeing. In fact, natural dyeing and Ayurvastra are two distinctly different approaches.
برخی افراد بهاشتباه تصور میکنند آیورواسترا همان رنگرزی طبیعی است؛ درحالیکه رنگرزی طبیعی و آیورواسترا، دو رویکرد متفاوتاند.
