Small Curves, Big Climate Impact
What looks like a simple pattern in dry land is actually one of the most powerful nature-based solutions in modern land restoration.
These semi-circular structures—known as Half-Moon Bunds—are transforming degraded, water-stressed landscapes across Africa and other arid regions.
In areas where rainfall once disappeared as fast runoff, these shallow earth embankments now capture, slow, and store water exactly where it is needed most.
The result is not just water retention—it is land regeneration.
💧 Rainwater infiltrates deeper into the soil instead of evaporating or flowing away
🌱 Vegetation begins to return naturally in previously barren zones
🐄 Pastures recover, supporting livestock and local livelihoods
🌍 Erosion is reduced, rebuilding fragile ecosystems over time
In regions like the Sahel and parts of East Africa, including Tanzania, this approach has helped bring dry, unproductive land back into ecological and agricultural use—without complex machinery or high-cost infrastructure.
The power of Half-Moon Bunds lies in their simplicity. They are built with local materials, local knowledge, and human labor—but deliver global climate value.
In a world searching for high-tech climate fixes, this solution reminds us of something fundamental:
Sustainability is not always about doing more. Sometimes it is about doing less—more intelligently.
By working with natural water flow instead of against it, we unlock one of the most scalable tools for land restoration, food security, and climate resilience.
Small curve. Big change.

Restoration isn’t just about landscapes, it’s about people.
In the Darjeeling hills, Sanjeeb Pradhan, Senior Project Manager from @atree, and his team are working across 17,000 hectares under the Mountains to Mangroves initiative, reviving ecosystems through community-led solutions, restoring water sources, and supporting local livelihoods.
With drying springs, erratic rainfall, and growing infrastructure pressures, these landscapes are under strain. Yet, through collective action, degraded corridors are being restored.
Because when communities lead, restoration lasts.

Vote in the poll or drop your answer in the comments! 👇
A) It promotes biodiversity and healthy soil 🌱
B) It regenerates the land for future generations🌿
C) It helps farmers and communities thrive 🧑🌾
D) All of the above! 🌟
At the Rainforest Alliance, we’re working with millions of farmers around the globe to not just cause less harm—but to actively restore and improve the planet’s health. 🌎
Because when we take care of the land, the land takes care of us. 💚

"Design needs to be more than human."
In this powerful clip, designer and innovator Natsai Audrey Chieza @natsaiaudrey explains why the future of design must move beyond human-centered thinking and begin considering ecosystems, biodiversity, and the natural world.
For decades, design has focused on products, consumers, and growth.
But what happens when we start designing for ecosystems, biodiversity, and the planet itself?
@natsaiaudrey challenges us to rethink who design serves and what kind of future we're creating.
🌱 Is human-centered design enough for the challenges ahead?

💚🌳 The building being controlled… by nature! This amazing new blind mimics the way a pine cone opens and closes, WITHOUT the need for power! It opens up, to let light in, and closes to keep a room cool according to the weather outside 🤯😳

Fragging is one of the ways we help reefs recover. By cutting healthy corals into smaller pieces, we can speed up their growth so what would take decades in the wild can now happen in months and years. This process gives reefs a fighting chance to thrive again. 🙌

♻️ One Field. Two Harvests.
What if the future of farming is not about using more land…
but using land more intelligently?
In Thailand, many farmers are growing two crops in the same field through a practice known as intercropping.
At first glance, it looks simple.
But behind it is a powerful circular approach to agriculture.
The taller plants provide shade, reduce water evaporation, protect the soil, and create a more stable microclimate for the crops growing underneath.
Meanwhile, the lower crops maximize unused space, improve soil coverage, and generate additional income from the same piece of land.
Nothing is wasted.
Every layer serves a purpose.
This is what circular thinking looks like in agriculture:
✔ Better resource efficiency
✔ More productivity from the same land
✔ Healthier ecosystems
✔ Reduced environmental pressure
✔ Greater resilience for farmers
Instead of relying on single-crop systems that exhaust soil and increase vulnerability, intercropping creates a more regenerative and balanced farming model where different plants support one another naturally.
Nature has always operated in systems.
As climate change, land degradation, and food insecurity continue to grow, farming systems that mimic natural ecosystems may become one of the most important solutions for the future of food.
Because sustainability is not always about producing more.
Sometimes it is about wasting less and designing smarter systems.

A retreat rooted in purpose, bursting with possibility. 🌍✨
We came together not just to reflect on all we’ve built but to dream forward. Surrounded by trees, soil, and shared intention, our Founding Partners, Teachers, Trustees, and new allies co-created a space of deep connection and bold imagination for a more regenerative future.
Thank you to our guiding voices @twcrowther (@restor.eco), @rewildingdriver (@rewildingb), and @ashbrownwilding (@ecorestorationcommunities) and to our steadfast partners @nealsyardremedies and @vivobarefoot for walking this path with us.
A special shout to Earthed teachers @poppyokotcha and @paulpowlesland whose courses, Grow Along and River Restoration, continue to inspire action from soil to stream. 🌱
With endless gratitude to @betheearth.foundation and @42acresretreat for making this moment possible.
Here’s to continuing the work rooted, connected, and (wildly) hopeful.

AD | What’s your hack for beating the heat this summer?
When temps soar, it’s not just uncomfortable, it can be dangerous. But under a mature tree, it can feel 20 degrees cooler! @arbordayfoundation
Trees aren’t just nice to look at, they’re nature’s original air conditioners. And as cities heat up, every degree of shade counts.
Here’s how you can beat the heat this summer:
👒 Wear a hat
👚Choose breathable clothes
🪟 Keep the shades drawn
🫙Stay hydrated
And most importantly, plant and protect trees. 🌳
Because when we bring shade to heat-vulnerable neighborhoods, we can cool entire communities.
